How to Change Your Country on Amazon So You Can Buy Different Kindle Books

Rights to books, and in particular rights to e-books, can be confusing. UK publishers cannot start selling books in the US and vice versa. For most modern books by great authors, you’ll see the hardcover and electronic versions published around the world at about the same time. For older books that were published before e-books were a big deal, and for smaller authors with publishing contracts, however, you’ll regularly find that the e-book version is available in some countries and not in other countries.

Take a look at this book, The King Arthur Trilogy Book One: Dragon’s Child by MK Hume. For me, it’s available on Kindle in the UK Amazon store.

… But not in the United States.

If you’re an American Hume fan, that would be pretty boring as you can’t buy books from the UK Kindle Store. I run into this problem from time to time, but luckily there is a solution: it is possible to change the store your Kindle uses.

For this to work, you need an address in the other country. For example, if you are American and want to use the UK Kindle Store, you need a UK address. There are two easy ways to get one: ask a friend in the UK if you can use their address for Kindle purchases, or create one. For me, who needs a fake address in the US, I myself am a supporter of ZIP 90210. Until I receive physical products, Amazon will not notice that 123 Harry Street, Beverly Hills, in California does not exist.

Regardless of how you get your address, the process is the same. Open the version of Amazon for the country you are currently using. For me, right now, it’s Amazon.com.

Hover over the Account & Lists dropdown and select Your Content & Devices.

Then select Settings.

Then under Country Settings, click Edit.

Enter the address you want to use in the country you want to change to and click Update.

And so Amazon thinks it resides elsewhere. You will then be able to purchase items in the Kindle Store for that country.

I’ve done this several times a year, as I’ve come across books that aren’t available at one Kindle store or another, and I’ve never had a problem. It never interferes with buying Amazon products, even if they think I’m based in the US when I’m in Ireland. If you have any problems, simply replace your resident address with your actual address, using the same process as above.
