Intel details its plans for Xeon and Itanium
Intel this week revealed new details about where it plans to take its server processor business, specifically with the Itanium processor.
As many know, Intel made a bet on Itanium when it came out several years ago. Using a then-uncommon Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) computing architecture left most of the industry doubtful of its feasibility in a world dominated by x86.
Today, however, the Itanium family brings in about $3.5 billion a year for Intel.
Diane Bryant, vice president of the Intel business group, disclosed several details that indicated that Intel will continue development of Itanium for the foreseeable future.
