NAB 2007: Microsoft introduces a development kit for HD-DVD encoding

At the National Association of Broadcasters, Microsoft is demonstrating a new software development kit (SDK) that provides developers with the core of the HD DVD video encoding technology used by Hollywood studios today.

Built on top of the Windows Media Format SDK, the VC-1 tool promises improved image quality, faster encoding speeds, and specialized encoding for online video, according to Microsoft. The software offers encoding options for HD DVD/Blu-ray, MPEG2 for broadcast TV and IPTV, and saves to the MP4 format, which is used on portable devices like the PSP.

Among the list of new features is a feature to more easily add closed captions to any video. Microsoft says the VC-1 software can also play high-definition video as high as 1080p, the highest commercial HD resolution currently available.
