3 reasons to play Project Wingman: Frontline 59 – Do a barrel roll

Project Wingman is a VR flight simulator in which you engage in gunfights in modern jets. Project Wingman: Frontline 59 brings the game to PS5 and PSVR2. We got to try it out at gamescom and here are three reasons to try out the game.

PSVR2 features

One of the possibilities of the new PSVR2 is eye tracking. The headset follows your eyes and knows what you are focusing on. Project Wingman: Frontline 59 uses this to help you aim.

Aiming in an airplane can be extremely difficult. You’re doing anything and everything at the same time. You have to find your enemies and keep them in your sight in a 3D environment, which is quite a challenge in itself. Meanwhile, you fly around in one of the fastest vehicles in the world, while your opponents do the same. Moreover, you have to avoid enemy fire with the somewhat complicated controls of a fighter jet. So if they can give us something, we won’t say no to it.

The VR headset uses eye tracking for the lock-on system that you use to fire your heat-seeking missiles at your enemies. Of course, you still have to do the normal shooting yourself by aiming the nose of your plane at an enemy airship. In addition, headset rumble is also used, so that you know if you are hit, or if something just flies past the ___pit. This way you are drawn into the action and everything feels a lot more realistic.

VR not required

Although we were advised that VR is really the best way to experience the game, something we fully understand, you can also play Project Wingman on the flat screen.

This is particularly nice if, like us, you are sensitive to motion sickness. With the fast movements in a 3D environment, it can really turn the stomach on its side. And that is certainly true for VR. So we appreciate the opportunity to play it in a flat environment for a while.

Of course you can also alternate. This allows you to relax without having to put the game down completely. Especially longer playing sessions can eventually cause a nauseous feeling. Or you can still experience that VR experience every now and then if you can’t handle it very well. Because it really is more fun.

New campaign

The new subtitle Frontline 59 not only announces the port to PS5. It also introduces a new roughly three-hour campaign on top of the existing campaign. The developers didn’t want to say too much about this yet, because it is still in development and players have to discover it for themselves. But it is extra content.

That’s on top of the story taking place during a war in an alternate version of Earth. There is also Conquest, a mode with roguelite elements that tests your strategy and resource management against multiple waves of enemies. That makes Frontline 59 the best version of Project Wingman you can play.

Release date still unknown

At the moment, all we know is that Project Wingman: Frontline 59 will be released “sometime in 2023.” However, the year is already well under way, so you may be able to start working on it soon.

These were three reasons to play Project Wingman: Frontline. The game will be released on PlayStation 5 and PSVR2. For this preview we played on PSVR2.
