Telefónica wants to charge more to those customers who connect the most


The CEO of Telefónica, Julio Linares, has issued a serious warning to the telecommunications industry, commenting that the current Internet model “is not sustainable.”

“The main problem facing the sector is a serious decoupling between traffic growth, the cost of the network, the income it generates and the tension in investment,” he argued from the Menéndez Pelayo University of Santander.

According to Linares, all these factors cause a series of ‘asymmetries’ and among them, the most talked about: the one caused by Internet users. “In Spain, 5% of mobile broadband users produce 75% of the traffic.
