The EU launches a study to discover ways to boost music sales over the Internet
The European Union will launch an initiative in July to try to harmonize the licenses to distribute “online” music and the rights catalogs associated with them throughout the community territory.
Right now, anyone who wants to open a virtual music store has to apply, country by country, for the corresponding permits. The purpose is, according to its promoters, to help the growth of jobs and creativity, reported a source close to this initiative. The European Commission is expected to start public consultations with interested actors at the end of July, to present a formal proposal in the fall of this year, according to the same sources, who assure that music is an ideal starting point to develop the new EU online services policy.
