The Lord of the Rings MMO: Amazon has canceled the game, says Jason Schreier

The Lord of the Rings MMO has been canceled by Amazon, apparently following a legal dispute with Tencent over control of Leyou and his plans.

The Lord of the Rings MMO was deleted from Amazonthis is what he reports Jason Schreiera well-known Bloomberg journalist, in a scoop reporting this cancellation as a consequence of a legal battle with Tencent.

Announced in 2019, The Lord of the Rings MMO was to be one of the large productions videogames by Amazon Game Studios, the videogame division of the company that is still struggling to establish itself in a solid way, but even this seems destined to be another failure for the group.

The game was in development in collaboration with Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd., Chinese team that was acquired by Tencent Holdings Ltd. last December. This caused a legal dispute between Amazon and Tencent, according to Schreier, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the game.

The information comes from a source “close to the matter”, which however has asked to remain anonymous because it is not authorized to speak in public on the matter, so for the moment we take Schreier’s report as information to be confirmed, but certainly plausible considering the reliability of the reporter.

An Amazon spokesperson actually confirmed to Bloomberg that, following Tencent’s acquisition of Leyou, “we are unable to secure the terms to proceed with the development of the game at present.” This would lead to his cancellation total, reportedly.

The Amazon team in charge of developing the MMO will therefore be moved to other projects: “We love the IP of The Lord of the Rings and we are sorry that we can not bring this game to users,” said the spokesperson in question. The cancellation of the MMO of the Lord of the Rings comes after that of Breakway and Crucible, two other games from the videogame division of Amazon. The other major project, New World, has been postponed several times, the last time being last February, and is now scheduled for August 31, 2021.
