Asus ROG Ally: This is how you can upgrade up to 8 TB of storage with an M.2 2280 SSD

With the ROG Ally, Asus has a portable gaming console with Windows 11 on the market that competes with the Steam Deck. The handheld comes with 512 gigabytes of internal memory as standard. The built-in SSD can be replaced without much effort; the manufacturer explains how this works on the product page.

However, there are limitations: The built-in SSD is an M.2 memory in 2230 format. This means that it is significantly shorter than conventional 2280 SSDs that are installed in the PS5, PC or notebook. In addition, they are currently only available with a maximum of two terabytes of memory – and they are also more expensive. 2280 SSDs, on the other hand, are available cheaper and with a storage capacity of up to eight terabytes.

Shortly after the market launch, resourceful modders discovered that the console also supports conventional 2280 SSDs. To do this, space first had to be created inside using a side cutter. This is no longer necessary, because you can now buy corresponding adapters for under 20 euros on Aliexpress. These get around the lack of space through a 90 degree angle. Below we will explain to you how you can cheaply upgrade the Asus ROG Ally using this adapter and a 2280 SSD.

Important: Asus of course only recommends replacing compatible 2230 SSDs. If you use an adapter and a traditional 2280 SSD, you may risk voiding the manufacturer’s warranty. Only carry out the exchange if you really feel confident doing it, otherwise leave it alone. SamaGame assumes no liability for any damage.

Before it begins

Before exchanging, there are a few things you need to consider first. According to user reports, not all commercially available SSDs are compatible with the console and will be accepted. It shouldn’t work with the Samsung 990 Pro. The Crucial P3 (Plus / Pro) are compatible. We were also able to successfully perform the upgrade with a Kioxia Exceria Pro NVMe SSD. The easiest way is to buy one of these models or try out an existing one.

If you don’t want to reinstall Windows, you should clone the built-in SSD storage. If you do this, you can use the console immediately after the exchange. Please note, however, that you must first deactivate Bitlocker encryption under Windows. To do this, type “Bitlocker” into the Windows search and turn off the encryption. This will take some time.

Alternatively, Windows can simply be reinstalled on the ROG Ally. To do this, turn it on while holding down the volume minus button. You end up in the BIOS and can start the new installation via “ASUS Cloud Recovery”.

Replacing the SSD on the Asus Rog Ally

  1. 1

First remove all cross screws on the back of the console. The middle screw in the bottom center gets stuck, but that’s not a problem.

  2. 2

Take your pick and carefully slide it between the front and back. Then ride along the line on both sides to open the console.

  3. 3

    Disconnects the battery.

  4. 4

Fold up the black cover. This is where the SSD is located. Loosen the screw and remove the storage latch.

  5. 5

Now take your adapter and insert it into the interface.

  6. 6

You now have to attach another screw at the place where the SSD screw was previously located. Now take your 2280 SSD, plug it in and also put a screw at the end so that it is secure. It is advisable to place a piece of adhesive tape at the rear end between the holder and the battery connector to avoid a possible short circuit. Then plug the battery back in, close the console and screw in the screws.

  7. 7

Important: If the console cannot be switched on, connect it to the charging cable. Wait a moment and turn it on. Now it should start as usual. Once it’s booted up, you should be able to see the increase in memory in your workstation.
