7 news that haven’t reached iPadOS 14 and we want iPadOS 15

iPadOS 14, unveiled last month at WWDC 2020, came loaded with news for the iPad, further expanding its possibilities. However, Apple left some advantages along the way that we would have liked to see in this new version, and that they would have brought the iPad closer to the Mac. iPadOS 15 could be the key to integrating them, and would establish the iPad as the definitive hybrid device.

Let’s see then What features should or should be present on iPadOS 15 next year.

1- Full support for a second screen

Today, and for a few years now, IPad lets you mirror your screen to an external monitor or TV, wired or via AirPlay if we have an Apple TV or a compatible TV. However, it is limited to that, duplicating your screen or at most reading the contents of the tablet.

Until iOS 13, given the inability to navigate on a second monitor due to the lack of touch input, there was no need to enable this as a second desktop, as it happens with the Mac. Now, with the latest versions of iPadOS, we can navigate the iPad with a mouse and keyboard, which would allow us to seamlessly use a second monitor with a second desktop through an alternate touch input method.

Full second monitor support would allow use of a second desktop like on the Mac, which makes the iPad much more productive thanks to the limitation of multitasking to Split View on a single screen.

2- Xcode on iPad

Despite the fact that developers build their apps for iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS in Xcode, these are limited to programming exclusively on Macbecause no other platform has a version of Xcode outside of the computer.

Xcode on the iPad would offer a world of possibilities, which this would reduce costs when programming applications because with an iPad of just over 300 € and a mouse and keyboard, we could use the application without any problem. In addition, would streamline the programmed code testing process, since you are already on a device that is running the system and architecture that it will then need to run natively on, and that will undoubtedly provide a better experience than testing on the Mac or having to transfer the app on the iPad or iPhone whenever you want to test the calendar.

Counting Apple now with Xcode for the ARM architecture thanks to the creation of its new Apple Silicon, adapting this application to your tablet should not be excessively complicated and would open up new possibilities for programmers. This can be taken as an example also for other applications like Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X, which Apple has already shown, can work without problems in the new Apple Silicon, which is ultimately based on an A12Z chip.

3- Multi-user on iPad

Having independent user accounts on iPad as well as in macOS is something that has also been asking for a long time, and yet Apple hasn’t included it in iOS 14 either. Users are eagerly awaiting this feature, IPad use is common among family members in many homesHowever, they are forced to use a common environment, sharing the entire structure of iPadOS between them.

We know that Apple can bring this feature without too much difficulty, because already offers it in the educational environmentSo we want to think that it’s a matter of time that you end up implementing this possibility on your tablet, at least as long as it doesn’t contradict another possibility on the device.

4- Access to the complete system by Files

Apple has taken an important step by including after several generations a file manager in its mobile systems. However Files do not offer full access and are limited to a closed environment that does not allow us to dive into the system as if a computer were doing it.

To bring the iPad closer to the desktop environment, the having an unlimited file management system is essential, and will allow new possibilities on the iPad.

5- Tools to manage external storage

Until now, the iPad allows us to access files from external drives that we connect via USB-C or with an adapter to the Lightning port. We can read, move and write files to it, but not manage the storage drive as such. We cannot know what volume is available or even format it.

iOS 15 should bring new tools to manage external unitsand don’t limit iPad to a device that can only read and move files on the connected drives.

6- Options from iOS to iPadOS

iOS 14 has brought many new possibilities to our iPhone. However, and despite a system based on each other, iPadOS 14 has no capabilities present on the phone.

The app to control Apple Watch, Health or the new Translate app are not present on iPadOS 14, and we think these are very necessary tools on the tablet. The watch could also be synced with the iPad, providing an extended view of the data, the Health app could also store our physical records and keep track and the new Translate app would be really useful because for many users, the iPad is a tool for travel time.

7- Solve window management with ⌘-TAB

Now that the iPad allows you to open multiple windows of an application and the keyboard support allows us to switch windows with the ⌘-TAB command, Apple should implement a second command to switch between different windows of the same app, allowing for example to navigate with a keyboard command between two different Safari windows open at the same time. Currently, you have to press and hold the app with two windows and choose the one you want, while tapping.
