How to create a virtual drive in UltraISO

How to create a virtual drive in UltraISO

Usually, the question of how to create a virtual drive in UltraISO arises when an error “Virtual CD/DVD drive not found” occurs in the program, but other options are also possible: for example, it is enough to create a virtual CD/DVD drive in UltraISO to mount multiple disk images.

This tutorial details how to create a virtual UltraISO drive and briefly about its usage options. See also Creating a bootable UltraISO USB flash drive.

Note: Normally, when UltraISO is installed, the virtual drive is created automatically (the option is given during installation, as in the screenshot below).

However, when using the portable version of the program, or sometimes when running Unchecky (a program that automatically unchecks unnecessary flags in installers), the virtual drive is not installed, as a result the user receives a Virtual Drive error message. CD/DVD not found and the drive cannot be created as described below, because the required options in the parameters are not active. In this case, reinstall UltraISO and make sure the option “Install ISO Emulator from CD/DVD ISODrive” is selected.

Creating a virtual CD/DVD drive in UltraISO

To create a virtual UltraISO drive, follow these simple steps

  • Run the program as administrator. You can right-click on the UltraISO shortcut and select “Run as administrator”.
  • In the program, open “Options” – “Settings” from the menu.
  • Click on the “Virtual Drive” tab.
  • In the “Number of Devices” field, specify the desired number of virtual drives (normally no more than 1 is required).
  • Click “OK”.
  • This will cause a new “CD drive” to appear in Explorer, which is a virtual UltraISO drive.
  • If you need to change the virtual drive letter, go back to the section in step 3, select the desired letter in the “New Drive Letter” field and click “Change”.
  • Once finished, the UltraISO virtual drive is created and ready to be used.

    Using the UltraISO virtual drive

UltraISO Virtual CD/DVD Drive can be used to mount disk images in different formats (iso, bin, cue, mdf, mds, nrg, img and others) and work with them on Windows 10, 8 and Windows 7 as CD normal.

You can mount the disk image in the interface of the UltraISO program itself (open the disk image, click the “Mount to virtual drive” button on the top menu bar) or using the virtual drive’s context menu. In the second case, right-click on the virtual drive, select “Mount” in UltraISO and specify the path to the disk image.

Unmounting (removing) is done in the same way, using the context menu.

If you want to remove the UltraISO virtual drive without uninstalling the program itself, similarly to creation, go to settings (running the program as administrator) and specify “None” in the “Number of devices” field. Then click “OK”.
