Anyone who likes to roam through forests and meadows to indulge in ornithology will soon no longer have to carry a heavy encyclopedia with them to classify the specimens. Well, hand on heart: most people are probably already working with appropriate apps. Nevertheless, this requires a certain amount of personal effort – birdwatchers have to recognize the animal and usually locate it themselves in the app. In the future, artificial intelligence (AI), such as the sports optics manufacturer Swarovski Optik as part of the CES 2024 (Consumer Electronics Show from January 9th to 12th, 2024 in Las Vegas, USA).

Binoculars with artificial intelligence

Swarovkski Optik relies on the binoculars AX Vision on AI. What does that mean specifically? According to the manufacturer, you get help identifying birds and other animals at the touch of a button. Do you even need that? Andreas Gerk, Head of Technology and Operations at Swarovski Optik, emphasizes in one Press release: “The added value of AX Visio for users is a real observation experience that is enriched by digitally imported information.”

Discover and observe thousands of animals

Like the news website Heise Reportedly, the device identifies 8,000 species of birds, around 300 mammals and a wide variety of butterflies. With the “Share discovery” function you can also show the person next to you what you have found. You mark the animal you are observing and the AX Visio leads you to the discovery thanks to red arrow markings in the display. The lenses of the AX Visio focus from 3 meters and compensate for -7 to +5 diopters of poor vision.

Take and share photos and videos

Yes, creating photos and videos also works. The right outdoor app helps you manage the files. The “Live View” function even makes it possible to share observations live. To do this, simply connect the AX Visio to your smartphone. The camera resolution is 13 megapixels, videos are in Full HD. The battery capacity of the AX Visio is 3,000 milliamp hours (mAh) and should provide an operating time of 15 hours.

Regular updates for new features

What about new functionality and longevity? Andreas Gerk says: “The analog components of the device, such as the optics and housing, meet our long-lasting Swarovski Optik quality standards. The performance of the digital features is brought up to date or improved through regular system and function updates. Creative third-party providers have an open programming interface and third parties have the opportunity to expand AX Visio with new functionalities.” According to the manufacturer, the binoculars weigh around 1,090 grams. The AX Visio will be available from February 2024 for 4,600 euros.
