The Chinese Room, a new project and virtual reality for Dear Esther

The Chinese Room went back to work after going out Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture exclusively on PlayStation 4.

This is the first time in our existence that we have not moved from one project to another immediately. We never had time to sit down and think about what we wanted to do in the next 3 or 4 years, so it’s something we relish.

However, we are already working on something else that we hope to share in a few months, we are trying different ideas. This will be a big change from our other games so it’s very exciting. At the moment there’s nothing more to add except some really cool concept art drawn by the awesome Jake Gumbleton.

A portage of Dear Esther on consoles with virtual reality headset compatibility is considered:

Everyone keeps telling us our titles would be perfect for VR, so we started taking a look (we’re currently waiting for an Occulus kit). We continued porting Dear Esther, moving from the Source engine to Unity, we plan to have it ready for next spring. And of course, it’s stimulating because the option of a console release is totally possible (and yes, including virtual reality).

Even if “console” is in the plural, the reference is directly intended for the PlayStation 4 since Microsoft has chosen augmented reality.

Do you think that this style of games based primarily on atmosphere could be suitable for virtual reality?
