When you start playing Baldur’s Gate 3, you’re faced with a big decision early on in character creation: do you want to create your own custom character or play as an Origin character? Here’s a guide to explain the difference between stock and custom characters in BG3, and our recommendation for which to choose.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has one of the most overwhelming character creation menus we’ve ever seen (you can even choose your genitals). But before you can choose your race, class, or background, the game confronts you with a pretty big decision: you have to decide between playing as a “custom” or “original” character.

We’ve outlined the differences between stock and custom characters below, along with recommendations. for you to play on. But at the end of the day, remember that neither is a bad choice, and there’s plenty of fun to be had with Custom and Origin characters.

Note: We won’t discuss Dark Urge characters as they are kind of a hybrid between Origin and Custom, and they are not recommended for beginners.

The Difference Between Origin and Custom Characters in Baldur’s Gate 3

Original characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 have a fixed appearance and a pre-written story, while custom characters are entirely invented by the player. With custom characters, you can choose race, class, and background, as well as change the appearance of the character. Whereas with the original characters, you can’t decide anything about that or change the appearance of the character. You can respect the Origin character and change class later in the gamebut not during character creation.

“Why the hell would anyone play an Origin character,” you might be wondering. The only big advantage of stock characters over custom characters is that Original characters have a ton of bespoke dialogue options and unique quests, while custom characters follow the “standard narrative” From the game. Also, Origin characters are easy and fast because all the character creation has been done for you.

Should you choose a custom or stock character in BG3?

We think most players should choose a custom character, especially because you can collect Origin characters in your party along the way, but the only way to get a custom character is if you play one yourself. . So if you choose a custom character, you get the best of both worlds; you can enjoy customizing your own character, but you can also experience the stories of your original companions (albeit as a spectator).

There are, however, two notable exceptions. If you’re a brand new player, picking up an Origin character might be a good thing for you because it’s easier. An Origin character may also be preferable if you’re playing Baldur’s Gate 3 co-op with a friend, because in those situations you won’t feel and play like a “main character” anyway.
