EA App: Game is already running

Why does the EA App keep showing the error message “Game is already running” even though the game isn’t started? What can I do if the game cannot be launched via the EA app and what could be the cause of the problem? A few months ago, EA replaced the old Origin client with the EA Client. Even if the EA client or the EA app doesn’t actually cause any major problems, we recently had a problem and couldn’t start any more games out of the blue. When trying to launch the game from the EA app, the error message “Game is already running. You can start playing. That will be fun”. But it’s not really fun because the game just won’t start.

Game is already running in the EA App

If the error message appears, there can be various reasons. With us, the message was displayed for every game, for example “Battlefield 2024 is already running” or The Sims 4 is already running”. The following solutions have mostly helped us to solve the problem.

  • Quit game and EA app completely: Quit both the EA app and the game completely via the task manager. It seems that the “Game is already running” error occurs more often when the game has crashed and is still running in the background. Alternatively, you can also briefly restart the PC.
  • Repair game: In the EA app you can right-click on the game in the game library under the installed games and then “Repair”.
  • Disable overlays: Are any programs with an overlay open in the background (e.g. Discord or an FPS display)? If so, then you should close the programs and try again.
  • Empty EA app cache: You can use the automatically installed tool called “App Recovery” to delete and empty the cache of the EA app.
  • Start game as administrator: Start the exe file of the game via the installation directory as administrator.

Uninstall and reinstall EA App

If the above solutions don’t help, then uninstalling and reinstalling the entire EA client should have helped some of those affected. If you uninstall the EA app, the installed EA games are not uninstalled and accordingly do NOT have to be downloaded again.
