Hogwarts Legacy has a particular diversity problem

Hogwarts Legacy seems to be a great success. The game scores well with the reviewers, is streamed a lot on Twitch and is one of the most popular games on Steam. Still, gamers have a particular diversity problem, which was quickly solved with a user-made mod.

Hogwarts Legacy is immensely popular and is one of the most successful game launches ever. On Steam, the game recorded the second highest number of simultaneous players ever for a single-player game, higher than Fallout 4, for example, but just behind Cyberpunk 2077. Still, the game has been the subject of quite a bit of controversy, and not just because of statements by the creator of the entire Potterverse, JK Rowling. No, several players complain that they can’t make their character ‘white’ enough in the game!

  • Score Hogwarts Legacy here!

Hogwarts Legacy, like many games, has an extensive option to customize your character. Anyone who only works with the character creator mode and wants to copy the image of Draco Malfoy there, for example, will soon notice that the skin color of your character cannot be made as ‘white’ as that of Draco. Big deal, you might think, but players from Northern Europe in particular are now complaining that it is now impossible to make an image of themselves in the game.

Modders rush to the rescue

It didn’t take long for the mod scene to recognize this problem and in no time a mod was released under the name Paler and Darker Skins for Player Character. Although this mod adds both extra dark and extra light skin tones, players seem to use the mod mainly to enable the ‘whiter’ skin tones. The mod does not add any new skin tones, but makes the lightest and darkest skin tones more pronounced.

The mod is immediately very popular. It is already the most popular mod on nexusmods.com for the game, more popular than mods that polish the frame rate or make other technical improvements.
