PS5 Bluray no sound: what to do?

Anyone who has bought the new PlayStation 5 from Sony will probably not only play games with the console, but also stream films and series as well as play DVDs/Blurays and perhaps one or two 4K Blurays. All you have to do is insert the disc into the PS5 drive and it should be recognized and displayed in the main menu. Depending on which DVD or Blu-Ray it is, there are sometimes sound problems when playing. The question arises, what can you do if the sound on the Bluray doesn’t work on the PS5?

PlayStation 5: No sound on Blu-Ray

If you can’t hear any sound when playing a DVD, a Blu-Ray or even a UHD 4K Blu-Ray, there could be various reasons. If the cabling is neat and the speakers are connected correctly, it is usually due to a setting. In the sound settings of the PlayStation 5 you can set the “Audio format (priority)” under “Audio output”, but you can also change the setting directly when playing the Blu-Ray. The setting was apparently the reason why some PS5 owners could not hear any sound on a Blu-Ray (including us).

  1. Open the settings in the main menu using the gear symbol.
  2. Go to “Audio output” under the “Sound” settings and change the “Audio format (priority)” at the bottom under “General”. You can choose from Linear PCM, Dolby and DTS. Depending on what is currently set, you should change the setting here.

Fix sound problems when playing Blu-Rays

In addition, as mentioned above, you can also adjust the setting directly when playing the Blu-Ray, which in turn solved the sound problem for us when playing Blu-Rays on the PS5.

  1. Insert the Blu-Ray or 4K Blu-ray into the drive of the PlayStation 5 and play it using the integrated disc player.
  2. During playback, press the Options button on the DualSense controller (the one with three horizontal lines) and select the button with three dots.
  3. In the context menu you can now call up the “Settings” and switch from “Linear PCM” to “Bitstream” under “Audio format”. After we changed the audio format to Bitstream, the sound of the Blu-Ray could suddenly be heard and the sound problems were resolved.

If you also have sound problems when playing Blu-Rays on the PlayStation 5 and know of other possible solutions, you are of course welcome to share them here in the comments section.
