M1 Mac Mini does not wake up connected displays

For some buyers of the M1 Mac Mini, the small Apple computer is absolutely unable to wake up the connected screen from sleep mode. The result: the screen remains black.

This is problematic for users because it disrupts the smooth workflow and the only alternative is to always leave the screen on or off.

Even this process has to be repeated several times before the external screen is controlled correctly again, some users said on Apple’s support forums.

The alternative is to let the display run all the time, which is of course suboptimal from an environmental and service life point of view.

Apple silicon and external screens at war

The problems are not new and the many macOS Big Sur updates have not helped either. The Mac mini has been around for many months now and for those affected there is still no solution and it doesn’t matter which way the monitor is connected. DisplayPort, HDMI or even USB-C/Thunderbolt are possible via adapter solutions. The displays work perfectly on other computers.

The problem is said to be more common when multiple users logged in to a Mac.

Updates have only partially helped so far

Apple had used macOS updates in the past to address other display issues related to M1 Macs and displays. For example, support for ultrawide displays was initially missing and color errors on displays connected via HDMI have also been fixed.
