5 good reasons not to listen to music when you exercise

To be completely honest, I spend a lot of my free time doing sports classes in rooms where the music is loud and omnipresent. So, advising you to train in silence – or at least calmly – might seem rather hypocritical. Moreover, various scientific studies have shown the benefit of music in the context of physical activity: depending on the style of music, the volume and the speed of the tempo, the sound can help keep the rhythm, maintain his effort, to chain the movements without thinking too much about it and, quite simply, to surpass himself. So why workout without music then? Here are some answers.

5 benefits of a sports session without music

To be more aware of your body

By listening to music while doing sports, whether running outside or doing fitness and bodybuilding exercises indoors, you cut yourself off from the noise around you (the creaking of machines, the bounce of shoes on the floor, the breathing of people training nearby, bad music playing on the speakers in the room, etc.). We create a bubble to focus on our objective… but we also cut ourselves off from certain physical and mental sensations. By removing your headphones, you pay more attention to your feelings: your muscle fatigue, your heart rate, your breathing and your state of mind.

To ensure the quality of training

By being more attentive to your physical sensations, you can better adapt your pace to your fitness level for the day. We understand more quickly the need to slow down our movement or, on the contrary, our ability to accelerate the pace and push our effort. Not distracting your workouts from your best playlists can be particularly beneficial when you learn new movements or decide to increase the loads and difficulty. It is better to fully master the new exercises that interest us, pay attention to the quality of the movements and develop good habits calmly at first. Then the music can come back.

To continue to progress

Sports sessions don’t all have to be the same: some are intense, others are less intense and that’s fine. Along the same lines, make sure to practice sometimes without music and other times with good music. By always doing sports with headphones, you run the risk of having the unpleasant feeling of not having a good session when you don’t have them. Changing your habits to vary your sensations is essential.

To train safely

Another important aspect to take into account: security. Running in the city or in nature carries obvious risks (passers-by and inattentive drivers, etc.). By doing sports without music and being more focused on your physical activity, you pay more attention to external elements and you will avoid falls, shocks and other mishaps.

To reserve your best playlists for performance

The purpose of this article is not to completely ban music from all sporting activities, as you will have understood, but to not use it systematically. In fact, I achieved my best performance over 10 km last year thanks to the playlist that a friend made for me (and also a little thanks to diligent training). The best playlists are saved for training sessions that promise to be particularly difficult, for times when you feel the need and for competition days. It remains to find the right balance.
