We have tested ClotHoff, the artificial intelligence that undresses women. It is as easy to use as it is worrying

Although artificial intelligence has many advantages for our daily lives, it also comes to have uses that can scare us. We have the clearest example very recently in a town in Extremadura where minors between 12 and 14 years old have taken photographs of girls from their town and have undressed them with an AI to spread them among themselves.

This is a serious problem, and we have been able to test artificial intelligence that allows us to do exactly this. AND The reality is that the result has left us stunned, because unlike others like DeepNude, there is no message that states that we are facing a fake nude. Simply, It is generated from the photograph that is uploaded and it will be possible to download without problem to start sharing.

AIs to undress people are a real business

As we say, we have been able to test one of the most famous artificial intelligence to undress people. And the result is quite good, maintaining skin tones and appearing a girl completely without clothes (because yes, these services are almost always advertised as AI that will only undress women). And we are only talking about girls because this AI does not undress men (as happens with others), obtaining in this case a very bad result and not at all realistic.

Image created with Stable Diffusion AI to perform the demo nude.

The result is therefore quite realistic, and one can think that the girl was indeed posing without any type of clothing. The only notice that appears and indicates that it is a is presented at the bottom of watermark mode where the URL of the website used appears to create these montages. But obviously it is something that can be cut very easily.

The requirements that a photograph must meet in order to be completely stripped are really easy to meet. The most important thing of all is that you should not wear a big coat, but rather Clothing should be more or less light. Furthermore, only one girl will be able to appear in the photograph, since if there are several it will not work correctly. And finally, the quality of the light and good focus will be essential so that the AI can detect the model and undress her.

But obviously this AI is not open to everyone, and such a claim to undress anyone is big business for its developers. This means that to use this AI you have to be buying different virtual currencies that are exchanged for each nude. Although the first of them is free so you can learn how the tool works and its power.

For example, having four attempts to obtain an image of a full nude is going to cost two dollars, existing different offers to get more and more coins at a lower price. And this is logically a big business for developers. But they can also be obtained for free by sharing the tool with different friends. Although what is truly clear is that good regulation is required to avoid these types of events that in the end are criminal.

ClothOff ‘washes its hands’ with the use of these images

If we look at the terms and conditions of this artificial intelligence tool, it stands out above all that ‘they wash their hands’. This means that they are not responsible for the use that will be given to the images that are generated (such as extorting someone). The Internet user “is responsible for not using the application for illegal or unauthorized purposes,” the website specifically says that it does not want judicial responsibilities for what can be done with its technology.

Although another important point may be the data processing that is carried out with all the images that are uploaded or generated. And it is that in many parts of the page before generating the content There are messages reminding them that they do not store any type of data. This implies that once the input image has been used in the AI, it is deleted from its database.

But as we always say: it is better to always distrust everything. This means that we do not recommend uploading personal or real images, since you can never know the real treatment behind them.

Using these media can be very expensive… if they are shared

As we have mentioned previously, these tools can be used precisely to extort money from a person by creating a fake nude (which can look very real). We have the example with the minors of a town in Extremadura who will have used similar tools to achieve this goal. And this is something that constitutes a crime.

Specifically, our legislation includes up to two years in prison for these types of acts. The professor and lawyer specializing in Digital Law explains that. This means that what is truly important in the eyes of a judge is what is done with those photographs, not how they are done.

Although, as is the case in Spain, prison sentences that can reach nine years in the case of child ___ography can not imply this prison sentence. It all depends on the age of those who commit the offense, and in the case of minors the penalty imposed is much milder.

TCL X955, first impressions: thanks to its 5,000 nits this is the most spectacular mini LED television we have tested

TCL is one of the brands that has opted most forcefully for LCD televisions with mini LED backlighting. I had the opportunity to try their first proposal equipped with this technology more than three and a half years ago, in January 2020. And it left me very good taste in the mouth. The image quality of that television, the X10 model, placed it at a level comparable to that of LG’s OLED C9 and Samsung’s Q90R. Big words.

I was able to test these three televisions simultaneously and in almost ideal conditions, and I was surprised by the audacity with which the X10 beat these two high-end models from Samsung and LG in some sections, such as maximum brightness delivery capacity or recovery of detail in shadow regions. The X955 model is TCL’s current flagship television, and it has inherited many of the qualities of that great X10. However, it has in its favor how much this brand’s engineers have refined its mini LED technology since then.

Its 5,000 nits are impressive, but this is not its only strong asset

At the moment this television is available in Spain in 85 and 98 inches, although an even larger version will arrive later. Its panel has been manufactured by TCL, and is a 10-bit VA type LCD matrix, with 4K UHD resolution and a frequency of 144Hz native refresh. A sheet of nanocrystals is responsible for color reproduction, which, according to this brand, is capable of covering 98% of the DCI-P3 color space. All of this sounds good, but the most impressive thing is the maximum brightness delivery capacity of this TV.

Its mini LED backlight array brings together several tens of thousands of diodes organized into 5,184 independent local dimming zones.

And TCL assures us that its backlighting system is capable of delivering peaks of 5,000 nits in a window that occupies 10% of the panel surface. This specification is impressive, but the numbers are often not supported by the actual performance of some televisions, so I am not usually intimidated by the figures. It is not the case. The images I have taken to illustrate this article do not do justice to the brightness delivery capacity of this television when it is in front of you. I assure you that it is overwhelming.

Its mini LED backlight array brings together several tens of thousands of diodes organized into 5,184 independent local dimming zones. TCL announces a 6,000:1 contrast ratio which fits well with what I have been able to perceive during this first contact. Yes, its blacks are extremely deep, not as deep as those provided by a good OLED television, which usually has a lower residual brightness, but in this section it easily rivals the best LCD televisions I have tested.

Still, its ability to recover detail in shadow regions impressed me more than the density of its blacks. The credit goes to the algorithm that is responsible for managing the mini LED backlight matrix and image processing, but the truth is that in this area this television is devastating. I would have liked to be able to try it with my own material (perhaps in the future the appropriate circumstances will arise to do so), but during this first contact it has shown me that in this area it fights head to head, for example, with the X95L of Sony, which is an outstanding LCD TV.

Its ability to recover detail in highlights (they are the most illuminated areas of each frame) does not seem as notable to me as what it offers us in the shadow regions, but here it also exhibits a high level. And when it comes to color I have nothing to object to. When the video signal it receives is up to par, this TV solve colorimetry with a lot of richness and a notable level of saturation. Nanocrystals have evolved a lot since they emerged in 2015, and the ones that TCL engineers have developed for this television are not the same ones that the X10 model had when I tested it in January 2020.

I’ve purposely saved the best for last. During this first contact, I have not been able to confirm with a spectrophotometer if it really delivers the 5,000 nit brightness peaks that TCL promises us, but I would bet that it does. It seems reasonable to question the impact that this monstrous brightness delivery capacity can have on our experience, and yes, if the contents are not up to par it is impossible to take advantage of these brightness peaks.

However, when we feed the panel with Dolby Vision content, its capacity for expression is spectacular. The realism that gives the images the possibility of delivering so much brightness in some limited regions of the panel is undoubted, which together with a very well-tuned image processing capable of minimize high frequency noise and reproducing foreground objects in great detail allows the X955 to shine. In my opinion this is one of the best mini LED LCD televisions on the market, although it is clear that its size and price put it out of the reach of most movie buffs.

We tested Petal Maps, Huawei’s new Google Maps that you can now download

Huawei’s alternative to Google Maps is starting to reach some users in beta: Petal Maps can now be downloaded to a selected group of mobiles. We have tested the application: we will tell you what it is like and what you can expect from it. We also explain how to download it if you have a Huawei Android.

Faced with the impossibility of accessing Google services and applications, Huawei has been developing its own alternatives. With HMS Core he got a way to bring your mobile services to a large number of smartphones, same as with Petal Search, your take on Google search (and app installer). And with petal Maps Huawei has achieved a great alternative to Google Maps, its operation is at a very good level. We have checked it.

Petal Maps, Maps and GPS Guided Navigation

Lacking Google Maps is one of the great drawbacks for the owners of a modern Huawei, not for nothing the application of maps has become almost a standard. It is true that Huawei’s AppGallery store has several quality alternatives, such as Here WeGo or TomTom Go Navigation, but the gap left by not having Google Maps reinstalled is large. Y Petal Maps covers you in a more than acceptable way.

Petal Maps is in beta version for some Huawei phones that have HMS Core with version 5.0 or higher. The available version is still somewhat limited, but it offers full access to maps and also GPS navigation, the two essential functions in an app of its kind.

We have been testing the location on the map and the navigation without having found notable problems: Petal Maps works as expected. It has a simple interface, the maps are perfectly legible, they have real-time traffic thanks to TomTom data (there are no more layers at the moment), favorite locations can be saved (by default Petal Maps brings work and home, two addresses that can be defined) and, as we said, point-to-point navigation with voice guidance is also included.

Petal Maps amply covers the functions of location on the map and point-to-point navigation through voice directions

Petal Maps is not anywhere near as complete as Google Maps, Huawei does not claim it either. It does offer what a user needs from a map application: to tell them where they are, where is any other point on the map and how to get to that point step by step. Petal Maps delivers.

No business recommendations, but with all the basics

If we talk about functions we have to admit that Google has made Maps a gigantic application. In fact, we could almost say that the maps function is the least of it since Google Maps focuses the experience on business and user activity. Recommendations are one of the basic functions, Google Maps has evolved towards a social environment rather than a purely informative application as far as maps are concerned.

Petal Maps is a clean map app, without superfluous options, an application that offers locations and navigation, nothing more. Although nothing less, Huawei has achieved a mobile software that is perfect to find any place in the world and navigate with the car to it. Yes for now no public transport or walks, we will see how it evolves.

We can search for a specific place in the world by receiving suggestions in the search bar, accessing the traffic layer to visualize road congestion in real time, we have the lower menu ‘Directions’ to start GPS navigation and a tab labeled ‘I’ that offer access to profile information. And ready.

Without downloading maps to use offline or the advanced GPS navigation options, Petal Maps loses possibilities, but surely Huawei will add it in the future

Petal Maps is still very basic, but it is also a beta, so Huawei has enormous room for improvement. We must refrain from knowing extended business information (it does include POIs by categories), we do not have satellite or public transport layers, Petal Maps does not allow downloading maps to be used offline and GPS navigation is very limited (it does not even include an option to avoid tolls). Huawei will expand the possibilities with future updates.

A great approach to Google Maps

We have already seen that Petal Maps is quite basic even though it offers what is necessary to be considered a good map and navigation application. There are other more complete options in AppGallery, such as Here WeGo or TomTom Go Navigation, but as a first approach Huawei has not achieved a bad application. It is perfect for those who do not need advanced use of maps.

Petal Maps is currently available for the Huawei P40 and Huawei P30, also for the new Huawei Mate 40. However, you can download the APK and use it on your Huawei mobile without having to be one of those mentioned. We have tested Petal Maps successfully on an Honor Play: you can download the file from this link (via Huawei Blog). The official AppGallery file is here.
