Casting for The Witcher’s Most Beautiful Character is…

The casting director of Netflix’s The Witcher series recently revealed that their casting of Yennefer of Vengerberg is meant to ‘defy’ beauty standards.

The Witcher on Netflix features some of the finest cast members of any series to ever grace the Netflix library. Let’s be honest, Henry Cavill alone would have been enough to make this claim true, and there’s also Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, and many more. So how come the show’s casting director revealed that one of them is supposed to “defy” beauty standards.

In an interview with Variety, The Witcher casting director revealed that Vengerberg’s Yennefer casting was intended. It’s unclear how a beautiful woman like Anya Chalotra changes anyone’s opinion of beauty, but we’ll see.

The Witcher Casting Director Explains Why Anya Chalotra Was Cast

We all know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there are obviously still beauty standards that permeate society. The epitome of objective beauty in The Witcher is supposed to be Yennefer of Vengerberg.

The casting director of the Netflix adaptation of The Witcher decided to take this opportunity to cast an Indian woman to embody this ideal of beauty.

I remember saying, “I think we need to challenge what people consider the standard of beauty.” And having a woman of color in that role does some incredibly powerful things for people watching.

This casting choice is supposed to challenge.

Having the embodiment of beauty in The Witcher represented by a woman of color sends a powerful message to other people of color. Although we’re not 100% convinced that this role really defies beauty standards; Anya Chalotra is conventionally beautiful.
