Amazon has announced the development of a new open-world MMO Lord of the Rings in partnership with Embracer Group.
Amazon Games and Embracer Group are joining forces to create a new MMO game based on The Lord of the Rings. The game should be developed by Amazon Games Orange County, studio which shone with the title New World. We can say that it is a nice revenge for the American giant which, two years ago, had to abandon a similar project following the failure of negotiations between it and Tencent.
What’s next for Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO?
Following a partnership with the Middle-Earth companies of the Embracer Group, Amazon Games plans to design and launch an open-world MMORPG inspired by the universe of JRR Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings (LOTR). The project is currently still in the preparatory stages of production, but Amazon has assured that the game will incorporate “loved stories from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit”

Embracer Freemode CEO Lee Guinchard also said, “The world of Middle-earth continues to prove endlessly fertile ground for creators and Amazon Games is passionate about creating immersive worlds and fascinating and publish games for a global audience.
And while details are being kept under wraps as to the name and release date for now, Amazon plans to launch the game on PC and console. It should be noted that this is not the first time that Embracer Group has collaborated with Amazon. Indeed, the previous year they revealed that Amazon would give full support and publish the next Tomb Raider game developed by Crystal Dynamics, a studio also owned by Embracer Group.
How the New World team at Amazon Games handles the Lord of the Rings-based MMO remains to be seen. In the meantime, this period is proving to be particularly busy for the games in Middle-earth. EA just launched the mobile title Heroes of Middle-earth while action-adventure game Gollum is set to release on May 25 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
