Ξ TREND

After almost a year paying for the SkyShowtime offer, I have canceled: the problem with streaming is not even raising prices

In the golden age of streaming (in which being profitable was the least important thing, not like now), I confess that I subscribed to everything: I felt that I had the best hits at my fingertips, but also a long list of series that I had grown up with (and that, like The Simpsons, I hope will always be with me). Some I had seen like Friends, others like ‘The Office’ I still have in mind.

No wonder: when Netflix launched in Spain it cost 7.99 euros per month (although I always used the plan that allowed me to share an account with three other people), HBO Max at half price ‘forever’, Prime Video included in my Prime and SkyShowTime subscription, one of the last to arrive, at a ridiculous price of 2.99 euros thanks to the 50% ‘lifetime’ discount. At that price all. I even realized that even though it was a few euros, I was wasting my money.

SkyShowTime: yes, but no

Being the last to arrive, beyond the claim of being the novelty, is not usually a good thing: there are already roles, customs and a share of the pie, that of the close streaming, where it was difficult to scratch. But hey, paying less than three euros for a service that, although in theory it does not allow account sharing, in practice, is almost a gift: with up to three simultaneous reproductions, it is less than one euro per person. The trick was to sign up through the application and not unsubscribe, because if you subscribe now, you will pay the 5.99 euros of its RRP.

Its other great bastion was its extensive catalog. At no time has he shown his chest by having current flashy series, because his ace in the hole is his wardrobe. More specifically films, series and documentaries from Universal Pictures, Nickelodeon, DreamWorks Animation, Showtime, Sky Studios, Paramount Pictures and Pea___. In titles: Bosé, the biopic of the famous singer, mythical films such as Law and Order, CSI: Las Vegas, Californication, The Good Wife, Yellowstone, Brotherhood, Ray Donovan, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds or two of the ones I have pending and more I want to see: The Office and Parks and Recreation. In cinema, we find Star Trek, Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Transformers, Gladiator, Top Gun, Fast & Furious or Despicable Me or The SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie.

The platform’s user experience is good, but This prince charming was beginning to see the seams: announced series that took a long time to wait, others that promise to be complete but then it turns out that seasons were missing, more of the same with film sagas. And disappearances: the SamaGame Móvil team detected a drop from 700 to 370 films. Yes, it is the law of life that some licenses expire, but others were their own. Finally there are the technical issues: continuing with a 1080p resolution in 2024 is inexplicable (and tarnishes the viewing of ambitious recent titles) and the sound remains at Dolby Digital 5.1.

. True, and that is what has made me continue within the platform even now, which integrated into Movistar makes it a more attractive platform for a potential subscription. The real reason is that the to-do list barely goes down: the time I have is used to watch the new series that emerge and call me (like Griselda), which means that I cWith the current streaming offer I am short of hours to see the rest. The day I seriously decide to watch ‘The Office’, it will be more worthwhile for me to sign up and devour it, because I know for sure that I will love it.
