Change in WhatsApp: 3 points disappeared – now open the settings

  • WhatsApp is making a change to the Android app’s main menu.
  • The three dots in the top right corner have disappeared. Instead, your profile picture can now be seen there.
  • You can also use this to open the settings.

The messenger WhatsApp is making a change to its Android app. In the main menu, the three dots above the chat list have disappeared. Previously, you could use it to open a menu that, among other things, gave you access to the settings. To get to these, you have to click on your profile picture instead, which will now appear instead of the three dots.

The change is probably part of a larger redesign. According to insiders, WhatsApp wants to adapt the look of its Android app to Google’s Material Design 3 guidelines. The appearance of the buttons in Messenger has recently been changed.

Settings are now accessible via profile picture

WhatsApp has not yet officially commented on the redesign. Other planned innovations include moving the menu bar from the top to the bottom and introducing filter options. The color scheme should also be changed. These changes are already being tested in the beta version of the messenger on Android phones.

There could be another reason for replacing the three dots with a profile picture. Because WhatsApp plans to soon allow you to use multiple WhatsApp accounts on one device. You can always see which account you are currently using in the main menu using the profile picture.

In the iOS app, you can access the settings via the menu bar at the bottom. It remains to be seen whether this will change soon and WhatsApp will adapt the design of the apps to each other.
