Disable R3 button on PS4 controller (and PS5)?

How can you Disable individual buttons on the PS4 controller? Can you do this with the DualShock 4 controller? Turn off R3 button? These questions may concern one or two owners of a PlayStation 4 (and also PlayStation 5) who, while playing, accidentally press a button that they didn’t mean to press. This is particularly annoying in some first-person shooters, where you often accidentally hit the R3 button when aiming and moving, which in many games is assigned a melee attack (for example in Call of Duty or in Battlefield). The question arises, how can you do that? Deactivate the R3 button on the PS4 controller or the PS5 controller?

PS4 and PS5 controllers: turn off R3 button?

In short, you can currently do neither Deactivate individual buttons on the PlayStation 4 and the new PlayStation 5. However, there are other options with which you can solve the “R3 key problem”.

  • Option 1 – Change key assignment in the game: In some PS4 and PS5 games you can change the button assignments directly in the game. For example, in Call of Duty Modern Warfare and CoD Warzone you can set different key assignments so that the melee attack is no longer carried out using the R3 key.
  • Option 2 – Change key assignment in the system settings: In the settings of the PS4 and PS5 you can set an adapted key assignment under “Accessibility” and thus generally change the key assignment. Under “Adjust button assignment” you can then swap the R3 button with a button that is not assigned and is not used in the respective game (in some shooters, the D-pad up button) in order to deactivate the R3 button .

Using the two options described, you can of course switch off or reassign not only the R3 button, but also other buttons if necessary.

Is there now a setting option on the PS4 or PS5 that allows you to turn off individual buttons and deactivate the R3 button, for example? If there are now other options and tricks here, please feel free to share them in the comments section.
