Chocolate basics

During your chocobo-fighting journey, there are a few things you should keep in mind. The Chocobos are relegated to their region of origin. So each new area you visit has a few checkboxes that you need to tick to get one. Once you get one, you get a handy whistle that calls your chocobo. Simply press the “R1” button to give it a hit, and your chocobo will rush to your side. Getting into the saddle is as easy as walking to your bird, because you will climb automatically! Keep in mind that your chocobo does a walk, a gallop, and a sprint. This allows you to have a decent speed control range!

Quarrels and stoppages of repair produce plumes. Make sure to pet the chicks!

As you battle other chocobos and repair chocobo stops, you will receive “Golden Feathers”. These beautiful chocolate feathers can be exchanged for cosmetic products with which you can adorn your new bird companions!

How to get a Chocobo in Junon

The iconic black chocobos of the Juno region can be obtained during Chapter 4. You must complete the side quest “Stuck in a Rut”. This quest takes place outside of Junon, at a Chocobo ranch. This quest will take you to a mining area where you will meet Belle, your next feathered partner. This bickering section requires Cloud to hide behind moving minecarts to avoid Belle’s line of sight. Make sure to pick up rocks, because you’ll need to throw them to trigger switches that will activate more minecarts. Make sure to use your dodge to follow the carts!

Abilities of Juno Chocobo

The dark-colored Chocobos of the Juno regions are acclimated to the mountainous region. This allows them to climb steep mountain walls (indicated by arrows painted on the mountainsides). Using this special ability will allow you to access new locations in the area or take different routes.

One interesting thing your chocobo can do is hunt for treasure (very reminiscent of Choco Hot and Cold from FFIX). Sometimes, when you’re out for a walk, your chocobo will stop dead in its tracks when it detects treasure nearby. You can rummage around to try to find it or spend time sniffing it. Whatever your preferred method, it’s a convenient way to get extra items. Thank you Belle!
