[GUIDE] : How to use Facebook on Apple Watch

While Facebook doesn’t have an official Apple Watch app, it is possible to browse Facebook on your wrist rather than reaching for your iPhone. And Apple made that even easier by integrating WebKit, the Safari web browser engine, into the Apple Watch operating system with the watchOS 5 update. Unfortunately, Apple didn’t actually include the app. Safari, so you will have to overcome a few hurdles to launch Facebook on your Apple Watch.

WatchOS 5 is not compatible with the original Apple Watch, however, it is compatible with the Apple Watch Series 1-4.

How to open Facebook on your Apple Watch (watchOS 5)

Although there is no Safari browser on your Apple Watch, the WebKit engine introduced in watchOS 5 allows a full web page to be opened when you tap a link in an email or text message. And while these web pages don’t have all the functionality of your iPhone or laptop, which means you won’t be able to watch YouTube videos, you can consume most other Facebook content. In fact, Facebook automatically formats the Apple Watch screen, so you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to read updates.

  • First, you’ll want to send yourself an email message. In the body of the email, place the following on a separate line: https://www.facebook.com
  • The email message should be sent to an account that you set up for the Mail program on your iPhone. This will allow you to read the email on your Apple Watch.
  • On your Apple Watch, launch the Mail app and go to the email client inbox where you sent the email. When you open the inbox, swipe down on the screen to force the email client to download new messages.
  • Once the email is displayed on your Apple Watch, open the message and tap the Facebook link.
  • After Facebook loads, you will need to log into your account. The good news is that Apple Watch will remember your sign-in information, so you should only have to sign in once.
  • Why an email instead of an SMS? A text message sent to you will also do the job, but the great thing about an email message is the ability to report it. This will make it easier to find the email in the future when you want to browse Facebook on your Apple Watch. The marked messages appear as an additional mailbox under Gmail, Yahoo! and your other inboxes.

You can tag the email with the Facebook link by holding your finger on the Apple Watch screen while the message is on the screen. A menu will appear. Just press Flag and the email message will appear in the Flagged inbox for easy future reference.

This trick will work with most other websites as well, but advanced features like video streaming may not work, meaning there is no streaming from Netflix to your watch… yet.
