Johto Pokémon and brand new features are being added to Pokémon GO!

As Niantic just announced on its official Pokémon GO blog, the long-awaited wait for the 2nd generation pocket monsters will soon be over! Later this week, players worldwide will have the opportunity to grab more than 80 Johto Pokémon that originally debuted in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games. But that’s not all, because a bunch of new features are also intended to expand the gaming experience in a refreshing way:

  • New developments: Among the more than 80 new Johto Pokémon, there will also be evolutions of older pocket monsters from the Kanto region. This will be possible with the help of new development items available at PokéStops.
  • New encounter gameplay: Wild Pokémon should react in new ways when attempted to be caught. New item carousels will be added to the encounter screen, allowing you to select Berries and Poké Balls directly.
  • New berries: In addition to raspberry berries, you can also find nanab berries and sanana berries at PokéStops. While the Nanab Berry slows down its movements when used against a wild Pokémon to make it easier to catch, the Sanana Berry doubles the number of candies in the event of a successful capture attempt.
  • New Avatars and Clothing Options: Thanks to a new selection of hats, shirts, pants and other items, you can make your character’s appearance even more individual.

Discover and catch more than 80 additional Pokémon anywhere in the world in Pokémon GO

Game update introduces Pokémon first discovered in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games. Additional changes affect encounters, evolutions, berries and trainer fashion.

San Francisco, February 15, 2017: Niantic, Inc. and The Pokémon Company International announced that 80 additional Pokémon will be coming to Pokémon GO later this week. These include Pokémon that were first discovered in the Johto region in the Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver video games, including Endive, Fiery Urchin, and Carnimani. Trainers can encounter and catch these “wild” Pokémon on adventurous exploration hunts in their neighborhoods and cities. In addition to the Pokémon appearing in the game for the first time, the latest update also includes changes to game mechanics. The new challenges for trainers include changed play behavior during encounters, new development items, two new berries and an expanded selection of outfits and accessories for trainer avatars.

“Today is an exciting day for Pokémon GO as we welcome more Pokémon while expanding encounter and capture mechanics for the global community of trainers who love playing the game,” said John Hanke, Founder and Chief Executive Officer from Niantic, Inc. “Pokémon GO is a live experience that we will continue to support and evolve in new and interesting ways for many years to come.”

“With Pokémon GO, The Pokémon Company wanted to create a compelling game that had real-world interaction with Pokémon as its core concept,” said JC Smith, senior director, consumer marketing, The Pokémon Company International. “The amazing response that Pokémon GO has received from millions of Pokémon fans, old and new, around the world is truly phenomenal. We’re excited to continue the adventure and fun of the Pokémon brand in this innovative way by introducing new Pokémon.”

The new evolution options introduced by this update to Pokémon GO allow players to evolve their Pokémon into Pokémon first discovered in the Johto region using evolution items. When catching Pokémon, trainers will be able to use two new berries – the Nanab Berry, which slows down a Pokémon’s movement, and the Sanana Berry, which doubles the number of Candies a trainer receives the next time a trainer is successful at catching them. Trainers will also have a new selection of headwear, shirts, pants and other items to customize the look of their avatar. Additional items will also be available in the in-game Pokémon GO shop.

Trainers can download Pokémon GO from the App Store for iOS devices and the Google Play Store for Android devices. A version of Pokémon GO for Apple Watch is also available in the App Store. With Nintendo’s Pokémon GO Plus, trainers can catch Pokémon and collect items with just the push of a button, without looking at a screen. The inventory of this additional device will be replenished in stores at the same time as the update and is available while stocks last.
