PS5 5GHz problem: What to do about the WiFi problems?

Anyone who has connected the PlayStation 5 to the router via Wi-Fi and to the Internet via Wi-Fi will probably have asked themselves when setting up the Wi-Fi whether the new PS5 also supports the 5 GHz frequency band. Yes, the new Sony console supports the 5 GHz frequency band in addition to the 2.4 GHz and many console owners will probably have established the WLAN connection to the router via this. There are increasing reports of problems in connection with the WLAN connection over 5 GHz. One problem, for example, is that the PS5’s WLAN connection over 5GHz simply breaks down sporadically or the bandwidth drops significantly, which of course has a negative effect on the download and its speed. The question arises, how to fix the 5GHz problems on the PlayStation 5?

PlayStation 5: WiFi problems over 5 GHz?

According to our research, the exact cause of the WLAN problem over the 5 GHz frequency band is not yet known exactly and accordingly, there is unfortunately no “one solution” that can solve the problem at the push of a button. On Reddit and other platforms, there are some reports that changing the WiFi channel and updating the router helped.

  • Bring PlayStation 5 and router up to date
  • Change WiFi channel
  • Reduce the distance to the router

However, the solutions did not solve the WLAN problem for everyone affected, so the cause of the problem probably lies elsewhere and you currently have to wait for an update from Sony. Anyone who is affected by the 5 GHz problems on the PS5 usually doesn’t have much choice at the moment other than switching to the 2.4 GHz frequency band. To do this, go to the network settings in the system settings and select the 2.4 GHz option under the Wi-Fi frequency band during the WLAN setup.

It will probably only be a matter of time before the WiFi problems on the PS5 with the 5GHz frequency band are fixed with an update. As soon as there is new information about this, we will of course add it here. If you have WiFi problems over 5 GHz on the PlayStation 5 and have solved them elsewhere, please feel free to post further solutions here in the comments.
