Collectible card games: The Elder Scrolls: Legends vs. Gwent vs. Hearthstone

In this feature, Alie compares the three biggest collectible card games at the moment, namely: The Elder Scrolls: Legends, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and Hearthstone. What are the similarities and what are the differences between these digital card games? And which of the three is the winner of the comparison?

For a long time I only played Hearthstone. As a (World of) Warcraft fan, the reason is easy to guess. The universe created by Blizzard simply appeals to me enormously. In the meantime, however, there are two hijackers on the coast of my time and attention: Gwent and The Elder Scrolls: Legends. In this feature I look at how the collectible card games compare. Before that, however, I will first describe the three games.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends

As the name of this game suggests, the maps in The Elder Scrolls: Legends are based on the characters and lore of The Elder Scrolls series. The plot (in Story mode) revolves around the fight against the High Elf Naarifin, who has invaded Cyrodill. He wants to release the demon Daedra to fulfill a prophecy. As The Forgotten Hero, your job is to stop him. However, you are always challenged to combat along the way. The nice thing is that you also have to make choices along the way. With this you determine, among other things, which cards you add to your deck.

In addition to Story mode, The Elder Scrolls: Legends has four more modes, namely Battle mode (PvP against friends, random matchmaking or ranked), Arena mode (PvE or PvP, where you have to win as many of the nine games as possible), Puzzle mode (PvE, where you have to defeat your computer opponent in one turn) and Gauntlet mode (periodic events).

A deck in The Elder Scrolls: Legends consists of 50 to 100 cards. You start the game with three cards and one Magicka. You use this Magicka to play cards. Each round your Magicka increases. There are four types of cards: Support (permanent boost), Action (instant action), Creatures (your figures on the board) and Items (which make your Creatures stronger). You play your Creatures in one of the two lanes. And with that we come to the first unique feature of TES: Legends: your Creatures can only attack other Creatures within their own lane. Lanes can have different properties, such as the Shadow Lane in which played Creatures cannot be attacked for one turn.

A second unique feature in The Elder Scrolls: Legends has to do with Runes. Each player starts with a number of Runes. For every five health points you lose, you lose one rune. This will earn you a new card, which you can sometimes use immediately. By winning pots, you can sometimes level cards as well. In some cases you can choose different versions of the same card.

Gwent: The Witcher Card Game

Where The Elder Scrolls: Legends is based on The Elder Scrolls universe, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game naturally owes its name to The Witcher series. In fact, you could just check Gwent in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I even know people who have played the card game there for hours. For the newcomer, however, I would like to explain exactly how you play Gwent.

Just like his peers, Gwent is also a turn-based card game. However, a game in Gwent does not consist of one round, but of three. If you can win two of the three rounds, you have won the game. Playing cards gives you Power. The goal is to ultimately have more Power on the board than your opponent. If so, you win the round. A round ends when both players click on Pass or run out of cards.

The crux in Gwent is that you always use the same deck within three rounds in a game. It is therefore important not to use all of your best cards in the first round. Each deck is devoted to factions, which have different strengths. A deck consists of 25 cards. Gwent doesn’t have a mana system, so you don’t have to wait x number of turns to play a card. This Witcher spin-off also has lanes. However, these lanes are based on the difference between melee and ranged cards.

Gwent has different modes, such as Casual Play and Rank Play. The latter mode works with a tier ladder, on which you try to finish as high as possible during seasons of a month. There are also special / seasonal events, in which you play with a deck that matches the theme and different rules apply. Finally, there is the Arena mode, where players have to build a deck with random cards. In this mode you play nine games with three lives. The goal is to win as many pots as possible.

Hearthstone

And then, of course, there is the veteran Hearthstone, probably the best known of the three trading card games in this feature. As said, this game is from Blizzard and builds on the Warcraft series. For example, the Heroes are well-known characters from that series. The Heroes all have a unique power, such as healing or summoning totems. The Heroes represent a class: Warrior, Shaman, Rogue, Paladin, Hunter, Druid, Warlock, Mage, and Priest. Many cards are specific to the Heroes, although there are also neutral cards.

In Hearthstone, use Mana Crystals to play cards. Every turn you get one Mana Crystal. The cards can be roughly divided into four types: Minions, Spells, Weapons and Hero. You can further subdivide the cards according to their rarity. Some cards also contain special effects. Take a Minion card with Charge. That “Charge” means that the Minion may attack immediately.

Hearthstone also has a number of modes. For starters, the card game uses the distinction between Standard and Wild. If you choose a Standard game, you can only use cards from the Basic and Classics collections, as well as cards from the most recent expansions. In Wild, however, you can use all the cards in the game.

Within Standard and Wild you can then choose from Casual and Ranked modes. The latter works with a tier ladder, with which you can earn rewards. Hearthstone also features Arena battles and the Tavern Brawl, in which a game with a whole new set of rules awaits you every week. Finally, this trading card game features another single-player adventure called Adventures.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends vs. Gwent vs. Hearthstone

If you have read the descriptions of The Elder Scrolls: Legends, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and Hearthstone, you will probably see many similarities. Logical, since all three are colleagues. Especially TES: Legends and Hearthstone are basically quite similar. So let’s first compare those games.

There are quite a few differences between Hearthstone and Legends, for example, Hearthstone with its many expansions is much more extensive at the moment. On the other hand, Legends is tactically more exciting with the addition of the two lanes and Runes. What strikes me further is that Legends looks a bit more F2P than Hearthstone. Earning in-game currency is easier so you spend less real-world money. To be able to participate in the Blizzard game a bit, you will really have to spend some gold or money. However, you do get a very polished look (think artwork, but also sound) in return. What also speaks in favor of Hearthstone is that the game is easy to pick up.

Gwent is a bit the odd one out in this comparison. This is mainly because the purpose of a game is very different. In Hearthstone and Legends the goal is to lower your opponent’s health to zero. In Gwent, however, you try to get the best set-up on the board and thus score more points than your opponent. Personally, I therefore find Gwent a lot more difficult than his two counterparts. It hardly resembles the ancestor of this genre: Magic. What is very nice, however, is that happiness is a much less important factor. However, what speaks less in favor of Gwent is the fact that the game does feel a bit bare, for example there are fewer (different) modes.

All three collectible card games discussed have their pros and cons. That makes it impossible for me to declare a winner. This feature therefore ends in a draw … Is that bad? No, you can simply check The Elder Scrolls: Legends and Gwent and Hearthstone for free. In other words: you don’t have to choose at all!

Still, I am of course curious: which of these three card games is your favorite? Do you like the tactical The Elder Scrolls: Legends? Does the polished Hearthstone make your heart beat faster? Or is the odd one out Gwent your favorite? Let us know that and more in the comments!
