AnyDesk (free): a virtual desktop to access your PC remotely

It’s an easy-to-learn remote desktop tool that installs in a few clicks. Its strong point: offering smooth access to the workstation, including from a mobile, even if the connection is slow.

At the time of the telework confinement imposed by the Covid-19 epidemic, many professionals and companies are looking for a technology to open remote access to the desktops installed on site. This is precisely the role of AnyDesk.

AnyDesk, what is it?

AnyDesk is a German solution tailored to access your workstation and all the applications installed there from anywhere. Falling into the category of remote desktop or virtual desktop technologies, the desktop as a service application has more than 25,000 business customers around the world.

AnyDesk has been downloaded over a million times. Its main advantage: its fluidity. Thanks to its powerful DeskRT compression codec, AnyDesk optimizes the latency time of remote access, whether from a laptop, a smartphone or even a USB stick, even with high screen resolutions or bandwidths of only 100 KB / s.

AnyDesk: free or paid?

AnyDesk is free for private, non-commercial use. For freelancers and small businesses, the publisher markets an entry-level offer (called AnyDesk Lite) at 8.99 euros per month. It supports connection to a single workstation regardless of the remote terminal used to access it: laptop PC, tablet, smartphone. The main features of the solution are available in this edition. On the program: transfer of files between computers, local printing of files stored on the remote station, control of the station from a mobile. It also includes an interactive whiteboard, as well as an auto-discovery function for nearby AnyDesk-equipped devices.

Priced at 16.99 euros per month, AnyDesk Professional, the supplier’s mid-range offer, can manage one or more connections to a potentially unlimited number of workstations. As for the high-end version of AnyDesk (AnyDesk Power), it extends to the management of an unlimited volume of simultaneous connections.

AnyDesk for desktop and laptop

AnyDesk can be installed on a stationary PC or a laptop PC via a version tailored for Windows available on its website. Very light, it is limited to 3.2 MB which allows immediate download and quick installation. Weighing 4.9 MB, a version is also available for Linux computers.

AnyDesk for Mac

AnyDesk also declines its remote desktop offer to allow remote access to Apple Macs. For these terminals, AnyDesk offers AnyDesk OS X. It is also a lightweight version, the installation package being limited to 5.1 MB.

AnyDesk for Android and iOS

On the smartphone side, AnyDesk is no exception. For this universe, the German company has developed applications for Android and iOS. They are designed to provide remote access to the workstation on the go, from Android phones or tablets, iPhones or iPads.

Using DeskRT compression technology, these Android and iOS applications are designed to provide stable, high frame rate wireless access with low latency and bandwidth optimization.

How to download AnyDesk?

As stated, AnyDesk is available for PCs, tablets and smartphones. The application is also the subject of a version for connected objects based on Raspberry Pi. All of these editions can be downloaded from the publisher’s website :

  • AnyDesk Free (version reserved for private, non-commercial use)
  • AnyDesk for Windows
  • AnyDesk pour Mac OS
  • AnyDesk for Linux
  • AnyDesk for Android
  • AnyDesk for iOS
  • AnyDesk for Raspberry Pi

AnyDesk vs TeamViewer

Historically, TeamViewer is by far the most popular remote desktop application. Nevertheless, it can display limits in terms of visual quality. It is precisely on this point that AnyDesk intends to make the difference with its DeskRT codec. Its technology is also intended to be more secure. It encrypts all remote accesses via the TLS (Transport Layer Security) system, and validates each connection via the 2048-bit RSA asymmetric encryption algorithm. For its part, TeamViewer also secures the traffic of its users, but by limiting itself to RSA 256-bit encryption.
