7. Once your correspondent has accepted the connection, you will see their Windows desktop appear on your screen.

AnyDesk (free): a virtual desktop to access your PC remotely

It’s an easy-to-learn remote desktop tool that installs in a few clicks. Its strong point: offering smooth access to the workstation, including from a mobile, even if the connection is slow.

At the time of the telework confinement imposed by the Covid-19 epidemic, many professionals and companies are looking for a technology to open remote access to the desktops installed on site. This is precisely the role of AnyDesk.

AnyDesk, what is it?

AnyDesk is a German solution tailored to access your workstation and all the applications installed there from anywhere. Falling into the category of remote desktop or virtual desktop technologies, the desktop as a service application has more than 25,000 business customers around the world.

AnyDesk has been downloaded over a million times. Its main advantage: its fluidity. Thanks to its powerful DeskRT compression codec, AnyDesk optimizes the latency time of remote access, whether from a laptop, a smartphone or even a USB stick, even with high screen resolutions or bandwidths of only 100 KB / s.

AnyDesk: free or paid?

AnyDesk is free for private, non-commercial use. For freelancers and small businesses, the publisher markets an entry-level offer (called AnyDesk Lite) at 8.99 euros per month. It supports connection to a single workstation regardless of the remote terminal used to access it: laptop PC, tablet, smartphone. The main features of the solution are available in this edition. On the program: transfer of files between computers, local printing of files stored on the remote station, control of the station from a mobile. It also includes an interactive whiteboard, as well as an auto-discovery function for nearby AnyDesk-equipped devices.

Priced at 16.99 euros per month, AnyDesk Professional, the supplier’s mid-range offer, can manage one or more connections to a potentially unlimited number of workstations. As for the high-end version of AnyDesk (AnyDesk Power), it extends to the management of an unlimited volume of simultaneous connections.

AnyDesk for desktop and laptop

AnyDesk can be installed on a stationary PC or a laptop PC via a version tailored for Windows available on its website. Very light, it is limited to 3.2 MB which allows immediate download and quick installation. Weighing 4.9 MB, a version is also available for Linux computers.

AnyDesk for Mac

AnyDesk also declines its remote desktop offer to allow remote access to Apple Macs. For these terminals, AnyDesk offers AnyDesk OS X. It is also a lightweight version, the installation package being limited to 5.1 MB.

AnyDesk for Android and iOS

On the smartphone side, AnyDesk is no exception. For this universe, the German company has developed applications for Android and iOS. They are designed to provide remote access to the workstation on the go, from Android phones or tablets, iPhones or iPads.

Using DeskRT compression technology, these Android and iOS applications are designed to provide stable, high frame rate wireless access with low latency and bandwidth optimization.

How to download AnyDesk?

As stated, AnyDesk is available for PCs, tablets and smartphones. The application is also the subject of a version for connected objects based on Raspberry Pi. All of these editions can be downloaded from the publisher’s website :

  • AnyDesk Free (version reserved for private, non-commercial use)
  • AnyDesk for Windows
  • AnyDesk pour Mac OS
  • AnyDesk for Linux
  • AnyDesk for Android
  • AnyDesk for iOS
  • AnyDesk for Raspberry Pi

AnyDesk vs TeamViewer

Historically, TeamViewer is by far the most popular remote desktop application. Nevertheless, it can display limits in terms of visual quality. It is precisely on this point that AnyDesk intends to make the difference with its DeskRT codec. Its technology is also intended to be more secure. It encrypts all remote accesses via the TLS (Transport Layer Security) system, and validates each connection via the 2048-bit RSA asymmetric encryption algorithm. For its part, TeamViewer also secures the traffic of its users, but by limiting itself to RSA 256-bit encryption.

A serious security flaw in Xiaomi scooters allows other users to control it remotely and even block it

Electric scooters are changing urban mobility, to such an extent that authorities are adapting the legislation to these new personal mobility vehicles (PMVs) and limiting their speed. One of the models that has contributed the most to this expansion is the Xiaomi Mi Electric Scooter and although it is not the only one, it is one of the most popular.

In addition to the official Mi Home application, there are multiple compatible third-party applications that serve to control other aspects of the scooter. One of them is M365 HUD and among its functions is to block the scooter from the mobile. But to our surprise, we have found that applications like this also allow block other people’s scooter. A serious security flaw since it allows you to easily access someone else’s information and even control your device without their permission.

Additionally, from Zimperium they report that The password would not be necessary to be able to access the scooter of other users. A serious security breach that puts the circulation of users at risk.

Update (03/19/2019): from Xiaomi they confirm that the new OTA that would fix the problem described with the scooters has already been released. To receive the update, you will need to update to the latest version of Mi Home.

If you never paired the scooter with Mi Home, then you don’t have a password

Most users have a mobile security system, be it a PIN code, face unlock or fingerprint reader. However, the same thing does not always happen on scooters. As it is a relatively new product and does not contain personal information, one does not have the feeling of needing a password to be able to use it. But it is a mistake, since we are facing a connected device and therefore capable of being accessed remotely.

To use the scooter it is not necessary to synchronize it with the mobile. However, one of the first steps that we should take, and the company itself tells us, is to install the official Mi Home application. It is from this application where from the first screen we will establish the password that will help us to protect the scooter.

What happens is that there are many users who They did not pair the scooter with the Mi Home application and therefore they do not have a password. This happens in those users who have simply decided not to link it with the mobile. Another case is those who bought the second-hand scooter and the device was already linked to someone else’s mobile, here there may be a password but we may not know it.

How to lock the scooter of others via bluetooth

Through a third-party application such as M365 HUD, we can control and see the speed of other people’s scooter. Although it is not the only one, since other similar ones such as m365 Tools or m365 Dashboard also have the same function.

How does it work? Very easy. It is an application for third parties where we will simply link with our scooter to be able to control the speed or see the energy that remains. When starting the application, it asks us to activate bluetooth. Once activated we can scan nearby devices. This is where we will find our scooter, but also that of anyone in bluetooth range, which usually goes up to about 20 meters.

When choosing the scooter, the first thing it asks us is to enter the password of the vehicle. All good, except for those scooters where no password is established. Since in this case we can connect as if the scooter were ours. In the same way that if someone grabs your mobile, opens it if you do not have a password, with the scooter you can do something equivalent in the case of not having configured it. We have been able to check it with our Xiaomi scooter and the application allows access without problems.

This allows the application to detect other people’s scooter via bluetooth and connect to it. Once this is done, without needing the permission of the other person, we can access the modes of use, speed, temperature, mileage and also the option to lock the scooter.

Specifically, the option to block the scooter of others seemed very dangerous, however we must warn that the option it can’t be done with the scooter running. That is, if we click on lock, it will work, but it does not brake the vehicle. It is only when it stops that the lockdown takes place.

As we have seen, the scooter cannot be locked when it is running. It does activate the command, but until it is braked, the block does not take effect.

When you click on the lock option what you do is prevent the rear wheel from rolling normally, so the scooter is immobilized. This is an option that is also available from the official application and should not be more important, however the fact of being able to activate it from the mobile makes setting a password relevant.

The application does not require an internet connection, as it works completely via bluetooth. In case of wanting connect to a person on the move, it is very difficult. The seconds that it is close are enough for it to appear on the list, but not for us to access it, put a password and click on block. In case we want to do it with strangers on the move, we should move ourselves too to be able to stay within range.

Zimperium discovers that it is also possible to lock scooters without a password

Update: In the original article we collected how a security flaw made Xiaomi scooters without a password vulnerable. Failure that, from Engadget, we were able to verify and replicate. However, from Zimperium they confirm that you can bypass password control, thus affecting all devices regardless of whether they are password protected or not. We have updated the article to reflect this.

The security breach is even more serious than we had initially been able to verify. As reported by Zimperium, there is an error in the authentication process from Bluetooth and the different commands can be carried out without the need for the password. That is, according to the security firm, the password would only be validated through the application, but the scooter itself does not need authentication.

Bluetooth access allows access to scooter functions such as the anti-theft system (for locking), speed control or eco mode. A connection that Zimperium has been able to verify would allow attacking the scooter’s firmware and installing malware. At the moment, there is no known patch and Xiaomi is expected to update its security and offer a patch to fix the security flaw.

Asked by SamaGame, from Xiaomi they respond with the following statement:

Xiaomi is aware of the vulnerability in which hackers with malicious intent could exploit and take control of the Mi Electric Scooters. As soon as we found this vulnerability, we have been working on a patch to correct it and remove all rogue applications. An update via OTA will be available as soon as possible. During this time, we advise users not to download unauthorized third-party applications. Xiaomi values the feedback from the security community and we are constantly improving based on all that feedback to build better and more secure products.
