Install and set up PS5 media player: Play videos

Where can you find the media player on the PS5? How do you set up the media player on the PlayStation 5 and play movies and music through it? This question may concern one or two buyers of the new Sony console who not only want to use the PS5 for gaming, but also to play other content such as videos, music or even pictures. The only question is, where can you find the media player app for the PS5?

Install media player app on PS5?

Unlike the PlayStation 4, there is currently no “real” media player app on the PS5. But it will probably only be a matter of time before the current Sony console gets its own media player app. Even though there is no real media player app yet, you can also play videos and music on the PlayStation 5 using the app called “Media Gallery”.

Play videos and music on PS5

Media Gallery comes pre-installed on PlayStation 5 by default and can be launched from the Games tab. The media gallery usually displays the screenshots and gameplay recordings. If you connect a USB stick or an external hard drive to the console, you can also use it to play videos and music on the PS5. It is important that the media files must be stored in a folder on the USB stick or external hard drive, otherwise they will not be displayed in the media gallery.

  1. Connect a USB stick or external hard drive to the PS5.
  2. Launch the “Media Gallery” app and go to the “USB” tab and play the video/movie. In addition to videos, you can also display images in the media gallery.
  3. You can fast forward and rewind the video using the control pad and use the shoulder buttons to switch through the videos on the USB drive.

If you want to play music on the PS5, you have to open the control center using the PlayStation button, select the note symbol at the bottom and then select the USB stick or external hard drive as the source. The important thing here is that the music must be stored in the folder called “Music” so that it can be found and played.

If you have connected the USB stick or external hard drive to the PS5 and the message “File system not supported” is displayed, then this is usually due to the wrong file system.
