Sharing Steam games and playing them at the same time: Is that possible?

In Steam, can I share my games via Family Sharing and play them at the same time? Can you play the same game at the same time with two people via the family library in Steam if you have shared it? This is a question that could certainly concern one or two Steam users. Since we recently asked ourselves the same question and are probably not alone, here is a brief summary of the topic.

You can share your games with family and friends using the Steam Family Library. You can activate the family library on up to 10 computers at the same time and authorize up to 5 accounts to access your own library. In addition to the question of how you can share Steam games, the question often arises as to whether you can play the shared Steam games at the same time.

Share Steam game and play at the same time

In short, according to our test, it doesn’t seem to be possible to share a Steam game and play it at the same time with another user via Family Sharing. If you want to play a Steam game yourself that another user is currently playing via Family Sharing, they will be given a few minutes to buy the game themselves or finish it. The account holder can access and play their games at any time, the other user with whom they shared the game will then be asked to purchase or be kicked out.

In some games there is a trick to get around this by starting the shared game as a user, disconnecting from the internet and then the other user can start it at the same time. According to our research, this trick no longer seems to work for the most part, as you now have to be online to access and play games that have been shared.

Can you share a Steam game and play it at the same time? If you have had other experiences, please share them here in the form of a comment under this article.
