Activate PS5 picture-in-picture: watch YouTube and Twitch while playing?

How to enable Picture-in-Picture feature on PS5? How can you watch YouTube or Twitch in picture-in-picture mode while playing on the PlayStation 5? Something like this might be the question from one or other owner of the new Sony console who has heard about the picture-in-picture function and would now like to use it themselves. Since we are certainly not the only PS5 owners who have been looking for the picture-in-picture function, here is a brief summary of what is currently possible and what is not.

PlayStation 5: Activate picture-in-picture function?

The short answer to the question is that, contrary to expectations, the picture-in-picture function cannot yet be used on the PlayStation 5 outside the USA. US users can now use a “trick” to watch a YouTube video or a Twitch stream while playing on the PlayStation 5 using picture-in-picture. For the “trick” you need the so-called Explore tab, which is currently only displayed on the home screen for US users.

You can then use the Explore tab to open a YouTube video or a Twitch stream and, when playing the video, use the “Screen Layout” at the bottom right to select the Picture-in-Picture mode (PiP) and the Pin mode on the other. Activate to-side mode. You can then start a PS5 game and the YouTube app or Twitch app will remain open.

YouTube and Twitch while playing are currently only available to US users

Sony probably wants to test the picture-in-picture function first and has therefore only activated it in the USA. As a user outside the USA, you cannot currently use picture-in-picture mode on the PS5. Since the feature already exists and can also be used by some players, it will only be a matter of time before German users can watch a video on YouTube or a stream on Twitch while playing using the picture-in-picture mode can look. It is still unclear whether you can also use other apps such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video via the picture-in-picture function.

As soon as there is new information on the topic, we will of course add it here.
