I watched the new film “The Master and Margarita” (2024) in the cinema. What was this all about, what does the book have to do with it?

The long-awaited film based on the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita” from director Mikhail Lokshin, has begun to be shown at the Russian box office.

The film adaptation topped the list of premieres and beat the ratings. The first viewers praised the film, but there were also those who considered the film a “humiliation of the original.”

We have already watched the new product and are eager to share our impressions. How did it turn out? Let’s figure it out.

The film reimagines the original book

What is the movie about: Moscow, 1930s. A famous writer at the height of his career suddenly finds himself at the center of a literary scandal. The performance of his play is removed from the repertoire, his colleagues demonstratively avoid meeting him, and in a matter of days he turns into an outcast. Soon after this, he meets Margarita, who becomes his lover and muse.

Inspired by her love and support, the writer takes on a new novel in which the characters are people from his environment, and the main character is the mysterious Woland, whose prototype is a recent foreign acquaintance. The writer immerses himself in the world of his novel and gradually ceases to notice how fiction and reality are intertwined into one whole.

I’ll say right away that you shouldn’t expect a page-by-page copy of a book from a painting. Here the plot is rethought and differs from the history that is taught in schools.

And this is precisely where the strength of the new film adaptation lies. It cannot be called secondary. There have been quite a lot of films based on the novel over the years, so the authors had to take a different path in order to differ from other film adaptations.

One way or another, it’s impossible to do without comparisons with the book.

The film places great emphasis on the Master and Woland. And although it lasts a little less than 3 hours, it was not possible to fit in all the events of the novel. However, all important plot points have been transferred and adapted for the modern viewer. Moreover, in 2024 this plot is perceived especially acutebecause it talks about the duplicity of the authorities and terrible censorship, which drives the writer crazy.

Compared to other film adaptations, including the famous TV series, the new product looks more like fan fiction based on it. No, they adhere to the original plot, but often deviate from the well-known narrative.

The film is kept in gloomy tones and hardly even gives a hint of a ray of hope. General condemnation, the heavy burden of the author of the play “Pontius Pilate” (yes, now it’s a play) and many other negative factors put pressure on the viewer throughout the entire running time.

“The Master and Margarita” 2024 is straight forward story with a completed ending. But it is full of liberties and deviations from the original idea, which is why many fans of Bulgakov’s work may not like it. On the other hand, this solution allows even those who know the novel to watch the film to watch it by heart.

Particularly interesting was Woland, played by August Diehl, known for many Hollywood films, including Inglourious Basterds. He was able to convey the entire emotional spectrum of the mysterious character and create a mystery around him with his gestures and facial expressions.

In general, Diehl’s character receives the lion’s share of the narrative here. And the original title of the film – “Woland” – would have suited him much more.

No less interesting is the love story between the Master and Margarita, which is given special emphasis. It’s interesting to follow the development of the lovers’ relationship, and this is almost the only love line in recent years that doesn’t make you sick. It is staged perfectly and organically woven into the plot.

But, again, due to the attempt of the film’s authors to “reinvent” the original book, many viewers will leave the theater disappointed.

The atmosphere is conveyed perfectly, you are imbued with it from the first minutes

I want to express special respect to the directors. They were able to do something incredible, you are immersed in the madness of the writer from the first minutes and empathize with all the characters until the end. You can literally feel the pain and feel all the “obscurantism” of Woland’s retinue.

This is a beautiful movie where it is given great attention to detail. Even the opening scene immediately captivates you. And the finale with Yulia Snigir in the role of Margarita can give you goosebumps.

The actors naturally got used to their roles and perfectly conveyed the emotions of the characters. There are many spectacular and impressive scenes here, albeit in a free interpretation. Some of them create real drive. The local universe is thought out to the smallest detail. It is clear that they worked meticulously on the painting.

Of course, the topic of religion is also constantly raised here. But at the same time no one doesn’t impose, for which special respect. But don’t expect philosophical discussions like in the original. This is, first and foremost, an entertaining movie. And it does its job well, while simultaneously raising themes of love, death and life.

Definitely worth a watch, even if you’re a fan of the book.

Of course, The Master and Margarita of 2024 has its own plot. But this is what catches you, allowing you to look at the original story from a different perspective.

No one can surpass the classic who wrote the novel for 20 years. However, the new film adaptation creates genuine interest. And thanks to the high-quality production, 2.5-3 hours fly by unnoticed.

You definitely won’t be left indifferent after watching it. People will definitely be divided into two camps: fans and haters. And it’s good that such a movie evokes true emotions.

I watched episode 8, “The Boy’s Word.” How the series ended, we discuss without spoilers

1.5 months have passed since the announcement of the series “The Boy’s Word”. During this time, it managed to become the most popular in Russia, overtaking a number of large projects.

Today, December 21, the online cinema Wink released the final eighth episode of the series. Several events have happened recently. Demo versions of the seventh and eighth episodes were leaked online, and against this background, rumors arose that because of this, they decided to reshoot the final act.

At first, the authors denied it, but the actors also supported this theory. However, later the creators of the series still confirmed that they were not filming the 8th episode, but decided to completely remake it.

We have already finished watching the series, watched the leaked versions and are in a hurry to share our impressions. The main article will be without spoilers so as not to spoil the experience, but we will add a block in which we will discuss the ending (it is hidden, do not open it if you have not seen the ending yet).

How did the project turn out? Let’s figure it out.

Boys’ squabbles and what they lead to

If for some reason you don’t yet know what this series is, read our first opinion. All the details are there.

The last episode lasted 58 minutes. It, like the entire show, is based on Robert Garayev’s book “The Boy’s Word. Criminal Tatarstan 1970-2010s” and talks about youth groups of the late 1980s.

This does not mean that the movie follows the book exactly. But it adheres to many points in the original source.

I’ve seen a lot of controversy about the series itself. Many people are convinced that he romanticizes gangsterism and condones such behavior, but this is absolutely not the case.

This is a case where you shouldn’t judge by its cover. Indeed, the project attracts attention with its not-so-great characters and shows their “coolness” from the very first episodes. But the essence lies in the very disclosure of the idea. The series aims at something completely different, namely demonstrating the consequences of such behavior.

People can also be understood. After all, from the very first episodes it is obvious what young people can be inspired by (although there is a rating of 18+, but who stops): robberies, “squeezing” purses, small items and so on. There have been various discussions on this topic more than once, and there was even news that teenagers allegedly tried to repeat the actions of the series. The latter, however, has not yet been officially confirmed.

However, this is a demonstration of real life. And it is not as rosy as some would like.

“The Boy’s Word” is a story of a man coming of age. Inevitably painful and aggravated by geopolitical shifts in the history of the country. This project talks about real people and their destinies, and in one of the episodes it even clearly writes what happened to some of the heroes. And, believe me, there is nothing inspiring here.

However, I have quibbles with the execution or development of some of the characters. The same Aigul does not get the most pleasant development of her story, but it’s as if you don’t want to worry about her, because she was given little screen time. And where she took part, we mostly heard silence.

There are also overactings, typical of young actors. But this has almost no effect on the overall perception of the project. You see that here they tried to really bring to life that bygone era, the time of perestroika and the difficult life of the ordinary population.

And for such moments I would like to express special respect.

Why is it worth watching episode 8 again if you saw the leaked one?

Earlier, demo versions of the last two episodes of “A Boy’s Word” appeared online. They had their rough patches, and the final episode even featured blue and green screens.

These episodes were not processed. They were prepared for demonstration to the production staff, and they showed only the initial ideas that were glued together into the finished episode.

And if the merged 7th episode differs from the release one in small details, then in the 8th episode the second half turned out to be completely different. The points in history are placed approximately the same, but the goals for achieving them differ. These stories are told in a completely different way, and the final version turned out to be more dramatic and vibrant, as the authors promised us.

How did “The Boy’s Word” end?

Important: Spoilers hidden here. Don’t open them if you haven’t seen the latest episode yet. We warned.

I tell you about the story of the main characters.

Andrey, aka “Coat,” goes to the market to buy flowers for a meeting with his mother. He sells his last hat to buy a modest bouquet. However, at the market he is accidentally met by the owner of a video recorder, whom the guys robbed earlier. Result: Andrei is caught by the police and put in prison.

Marat joins the Komsomol, and the organizers help him deal with the offender Aigul. The police take him to the men’s room, and Marat beats him half to death. Result: Marat is broken and doesn’t know what to do next

Finally, Vova “Adidas”’s father does not want to see him anymore, having learned that he killed a man. He nevertheless decides to run away with his beloved to Abkhazia, she buys them tickets, because directions to Vova have already been sent out.

But the guy still decides to stop by to congratulate his father on his anniversary, despite Natasha’s requests not to do this. The employees call the police, they almost catch Adidas, but he escapes from the building, catching one of the policemen and taking his gun.

Immediately around the corner, he throws away his weapon, but other employees already consider him armed. Result: Vova does not have time to reach the car in which he was going to leave the country, he is shot by a police officer, and he dies in Natasha’s arms.

Will there be a second season of the series “The Boy’s Word”

It’s difficult to say anything here. The story itself is considered logically complete and does not require continuation.

Nevertheless, the series has gained enormous popularity among Russian audiences. And most often such phenomena end in continuation.

At the moment, there are no official statements about the extension of the project for season 2. However, on the project’s Instagram page (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist in Russia and banned) it is said that “it’s too early to talk about the second season.”
