Discovery of a key element of life on an ocean world orbiting Saturn


This is the first time that phosphorus has been discovered in an ocean beyond Earth.

A chemical element essential to life has been discovered on Saturn’s moon Enceladus. Phosphorus has been detected in grains of salt ice released into space by plumes that shoot out between cracks in the moon’s icy envelope. An ocean exists beneath the thick icy surface of Enceladus, and plumes of material regularly escape from geysers at the moon’s south pole. These materials are then incorporated into Saturn’s outermost E ring.

The scientists used data from NASA’s Cassini mission, which studied Saturn and its moons between 2004 and 2017. The probe passed through the plumes of Enceladus and Saturn’s E ring numerous times, and the Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer has detected minerals and organic compounds necessary for life.

Previously, researchers had detected the presence of sodium, potassium, chlorine and carbonate compounds in the ice grains collected and analyzed by Cassini. Today, scientists can add phosphorus to the list. A study detailing these findings was published Wednesday in the journal Nature.

“Phosphorus in the form of phosphates is vital for all life on Earth,” said study lead author Frank Postberg, professor of planetary sciences at Freie Universität Berlin, in a statement. “It is essential for the creation of DNA and RNA, cell membranes and ATP (the universal energy carrier in cells), for example. Life as we know it would simply not exist without phosphates”.

This is the first time that phosphorus has been discovered in an ocean beyond Earth.

“Previous geochemical models were split on whether the Enceladus ocean contained significant amounts of phosphates,” Postberg said. “The measurements made by Cassini leave no doubt that there are substantial amounts of this essential substance in ocean water.
