Tip: this is how you change the black bars of the subtitles in the Viaplay app

Viaplay: get rid of those black bars for subtitles

Viaplay will be available in the Netherlands from March 1 and a subscription has also been taken out here. For me personally, I have to wait for the new F1 season. Still, I have of course already browsed through the current range of series and films and have also watched some. I was immediately irritated by the subtitles, because they consist of large black bars with white letters, so that part of the content is no longer visible.

Unfortunately, this cannot be adjusted in the Viaplay app itself, which is easily possible with Amazon Prime Video, for example. However, there is an option to adjust the subtitle style. Unfortunately, this does not seem to work immediately on every Android device.

Unfortunately, it is not known exactly what causes this. It is also possible that the steps below are called slightly different on your smartphone. This step-by-step plan was written based on Android 12 on a Google Pixel 6 Pro.

This is how you change the style of the subtitles in Viaplay

  1. Grab your smartphone and open the settings;
  2. Tap the ‘Accessibility’ option;
  3. Scroll to ‘Subtitle Preferences’ and tap it;
  4. Tap ‘Subtitle size and style’;
  5. Select the ‘Subtitle Style’ option and tap ‘Custom’;
  6. Set the style the way you want in terms of colors and more.

You can set everything in the menu, including the font size or font. Of course you can also play with the color of the letters or the color of the bar behind them. In addition to black and nice colors, you can also choose not to show a bar.

Your smartphone immediately shows what it looks like. Once you have found the perfect combination, it is a matter of leaving the menu and restarting Viaplay.

If the above step-by-step plan does not work, you are unfortunately still bound to the black bars with white letters. You can try to perform the above steps on different devices, but also tablets or, for example, the Nvidia Shield Pro. If you watch Viaplay via Google Chrome, there is an extension available to solve this problem.

Having problems with Viaplay? This is the cause!

As of March 1, Viaplay has been officially launched in the Netherlands by parent company Nordic Entertainment Group AB. However, the experience is not completely smooth for all users.

Because the streaming service has just launched, there are of course many people who want to see what’s available right away. This will lead to a large number of visitors to the app or to the site, so the servers of the streaming service will have to work overtime in the coming week. This can mean that it sometimes does not run smoothly and then you get an error 404. The button in particular works poorly, because you will then see an empty screen. You can work around this problem by clicking the login button and creating an account from there.

There also seem to be some problems if too many screens are used at the same time. You can watch two streams at the same time at Viaplay. But if you want to start a third one, you will get an error and you will have to close another stream.

A simple idea, but it doesn’t always work right away. If you are sure that you are starting the second stream and not the third, but still get an error, then this is a service error. This can be remedied by clicking logout and then logging in again.

Viaplay via Ziggo or via KPN also problems

If you want to log in via your Ziggo or KPN linked account, you may also encounter some minor problems, but don’t worry because Ziggo or KPN can help you with that. Viaplay has indicated in a small FAQ that if there are problems you can contact your provider. During the coming days you will therefore also receive more information from your provider about your Viaplay account.

This is how you turn off the Viaplay commentary in F1 TV Pro

At the Baku GP, Dutch commentary was heard on F1 TV Pro for the first time this season. That’s only the same comment as with Viaplay, which is still not particularly popular. Fortunately, you can change the comment, but how?

Anyone who uses F1 TV Pro this season to follow Formula 1 could not opt for Dutch commentary until recently. That option is now there and for some users it was a bit raw that this option was automatically on during the GP of Azerbaijan. After all, it is the still little-loved commentary that can also be heard at Viaplay.

  • Score an official Red Bull Racing cap!

How do you get different comments on F1 TV Pro?

Fortunately, if you watch F1 TV Pro and suddenly had Dutch commentary last weekend while you don’t appreciate it, you can easily get rid of it. You only have to press a few buttons and you have another commentary track. That way you can switch to, for example, an English stream.

The easiest way is to choose the live option on the right side of your stream window, recognizable by an icon that looks like a circle with a dot. Through this stream you get English commentary from the F1 TV team itself.

By also choosing the option of the international feed on the right side of your screen, you can find even more commentary streams. For example, you can switch back to Dutch, or the English-language stream of the British provider Sky Sports. If there is another language that you understand well, you can also find it there. You can find the other languages by pressing the gear icon, which will show you the different options.

F1 TV commentary can also be turned off completely

Another option you can find with the international feed is an audio track called “FX”. With this you get the sounds of the race without being disturbed by commentary. Handy if you don’t like comments at all, for example.

Another option you have is to get back the beloved commentary by Olav Mol and Jack Plooij, for example. They can be heard on Grand Prix Radio. You have to try to get it right with your video stream, but it gives extra opportunity for commentary to listen to.
