How to change icons on Xiaomi phones with MIUI

Personalization on Xiaomi phones is so broad that MIUI, the brand’s personalized layer, Allows you to change almost any look without complications. Icons are part of these customization possibilities since the theme app has an infinity of these elements. In addition, it is also possible to install icon packs from the Google Play Store.

Installing themes on a Xiaomi mobile is as easy as going to its themes app and downloading one of the available ones, at least as long as you said the app (in Spain it can be used). Brand personalization allows completely change the appearance of the interface or choose portions: wallpapers, fonts or icons. While there are several ways to customize the design of the layers, including these icons: from within the Themes app, install a launcher or download icon packs from Google Play. Let’s see how to perform each method.

Customize the icons of the « themes »

This is the easiest option as MIUI provides everything you need to adapt phone icons to a wide variety of styles. Of course, with a downside: the appearance of the designs is generally too oriental, so there aren’t too many styles of materials to give an example. Still, it’s worth taking a look, you can find the icons that match your phone.

To download and install icon packs from the theme app, follow these steps:

  • Find the ‘Themes’ application among all the applications installed on your Xiaomi.
  • Choose one of the themes making sure they have icons (They should be in the majority).
  • Go back to the themes home screen and click on the icon at the bottom right, the profile icon.
  • Go to the « Icons » category.
  • Click on the theme you downloaded, then click « Apply. »

In this way you will not apply the entire theme because you will have selected only its icons. Of course, if you want to completely change the MIUI interface, apply the theme from its ‘Themes’ category. Also in your profile options (local files).

Customize the icons of a launcher

MIUI is a layer that offers many possibilities, but among them Cannot find icon pack installation on Google Play. It is a hindrance if you want to install the packs you bought from the Android store on your phone because you cannot use the MIUI launcher with them. In return, you have a plethora of interfaces at your fingertips, like Nova Launcher.

Nova is one of the best launchers that you can install on your phone. Clean and with an ‘Android stock’ design, highly customizable and with the possibility of installing icon packs. If you want to use your own packs with MIUI Nova, it is highly recommended.

Nova Launcher

Other launchers compatible with the installation of icon packs (the first two are from Xiaomi):

Apply your icon packs without installing launchers

Installing a launcher is a bit tricky as it’s nothing more than a patch that keeps fixing the problem: change MIUI icons with Google Play packs. Therefore, let’s see how the packs are installed in the MIUI launcher that comes with your Xiaomi by default. To do this, we will use an application to modify the installed themes: Theme Editor For MIUI.

Theme editor for MIUI

Theme editor for MIUI allows you to edit themes installed in MIUI. You can change any element, such as backgrounds, fonts or of course icons. And it does exactly what we are looking for: with this app we can apply icon packs downloaded from Google Play directly on other icons downloaded from « Themes ». It is the closest thing in MIUI to installing a third party package.

To use the theme editor to edit MIUI icons, you need to do the following:

  • Make sure you have downloaded the icon packs you want to install on your mobile.
  • Go to the MIUI themes app and download the one you like for its design and appearance. It doesn’t matter that you are not interested in its icons because we will change them with Theme Manager for MIUI.
  • Once the theme is downloaded, open the Theme Editor For MIUI app.
  • Tap « Choose a theme » and choose the theme you downloaded.
  • When you have chosen the theme, click on « Start »: all the changes you make in the application will be made on the selected theme.
  • Click on « Application icons » then on « Import the complete icon pack ».
  • Select the pack from the “Select Icon Pack” drop-down list and click “Done”.
  • Uncheck the « Apply changes to installed applications only » button. In this way all theme icons will be overwritten by those from the packWhether or not you have the relevant apps on your phone.
  • Click on « Back » to return to the initial menu of the theme editor for MIUI.
  • Click on « Next » and end the process with « Finish ». The app will create a copy of the chosen theme with the icons from the Google Play package. When finished, click on « Install » to have the modified theme is installed on the mobile.
  • Now go to MIUI ‘Themes’ app and apply duplicate theme manager for MIUI theme, the one that says ‘(Apply me)’.
  • Your theme may uninstall after a while, this is not a problem with the Theme Editor for MIUI: Xiaomi does not allow you to apply third party themes. If this happens to you, you will have to reapply the theme with the icons. Or you can register your Xiaomi account as a designer on this website: this will allow you to use third-party themes.

You can change the themes you download from the MIUI app and also some of the themes preinstalled on your Xiaomi phone. After the theme is applied, you can change the wallpapers to your liking to match the style of the icons.

Bad news: the new Redmi Note 13 will not solve the problem with the proximity sensor of Xiaomi phones

As you already know, Xiaomi presented its new Redmi Note 13 family on September 21, a new generation made up of the Redmi Note 13 Pro+, Redmi Note 13 Pro and Redmi Note 13 5G, which offer a lot for a fairly moderate price. However, even though we are talking about one of the most successful series in the world of smartphones, it has been dragging a quite important problem over the last few years.

This has to do with the proximity sensor that Xiaomi has been introducing for quite some time in some of its equipment, and it is an element that It is giving problems to many users when they use it on a daily basis.. And if you were thinking that this generation was going to be different, everything seems to indicate that we will continue with a new chapter in this worrying story.

Elliptic Labs is still in charge of supplying the proximity sensor in the new Redmi Note 13

We saw it in the Redmi Note 11 and Redmi Note 12, and Xiaomi has confirmed that in these new Redmi Note 13 everything will remain the same. We talk about the virtual proximity sensor called AI INNER BEAUTY and supplied by the Norwegian company Elliptic Labs which, as you already know, is responsible for turning off the screen automatically when we bring the phone to our ear, although it is not as precise as we would like.

The main advantage of using this component is that it allows eliminate dedicated hardware that can be used to add other elements such as greater battery capacity. The theory sounds great, but in practice we are talking about a system that is not performing very well in daily use, and it is something that users continue to suffer from today.

Of course, we must also highlight that Laila Danielsen, CEO of Elliptic Labs, has assured that This tool continues to improve over time thanks to artificial intelligencewhich is capable of analyzing in a much more effective way the ultrasounds necessary for the sensor to function correctly.

However, experience tells us that it is better to be cautious and wait to see how this component works within the new Redmi Note 13, since history does not play much less in their favor. We will see what ends up happening in the end, but it is clear that Xiaomi is still determined to incorporate a tool that does not quite fit the needs of its users.

Samsung Dual Audio: These cell phones have the feature

A tablet for the kids and two pairs of Bluetooth headphones. This is the perfect gift for parents who want to be entertained on long car journeys without having to listen to hours of children’s TV shows. Thanks to dual audio from Samsung, that shouldn’t be a problem. Neither does pairing multiple Bluetooth speakers together.

But not every model has this feature. If you bought the extremely popular Galaxy Tab A8, you’re out of luck. Because this and many other models do not support the useful audio splitting technology.

What is dual audio?

Dual audio is a technology from Samsung that allows two listeners to enjoy the same sound – for example from music streaming – on two different Bluetooth headphones or speakers. It is not activated automatically, but must be activated via the Bluetooth settings.

Which Samsung models have dual audio?

Currently dual audio is a real premium feature. And that means it’s only available for Samsung’s premium products. If you own one of the following models, you can use the function:

  • Galaxy Note 8 to 20
  • Galaxy S8 to S22
  • Galaxy Tab S4 to S8
  • Galaxy Z Flip 1 to 4 (incl. Bespoke Edition)
  • Galaxy Z Fold 1 to 4 (incl. Bespoke Edition)
  • Galaxy A53 5G
  • Galaxy A52, A52 5G, A52s
  • Galaxy A54 5G

Other smartphones, tablets and notebooks from the Samsung product portfolio do not currently support dual audio. Experience reports from the Internet state, however, that the South Koreans later added or removed the function for some devices. This list is therefore not final.

What features do other manufacturers offer?

Other manufacturers offer a comparable function. So you can stream audio from your iPhone to more than one pair of Airpods using the Share Audio feature. However, the supported headphones are exclusively Apple and Beats products that are compatible.

If you want to use a more open system and choose your headphones based on quality instead of brand and supported technology, you should use a smart device with LE Audio and the LC3 codec.

LE stands for Low Energy and is a rather new standard designed for the transmission of sound and information to wearables and headphones. The LC3 codec builds on this and, from Bluetooth version 5.2, enables more than one pair of headphones to be controlled at the same time.

Since the technology is still quite young, the compatible devices are usually newer smartphones and tablets. The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 and also the Redmi Note 11 are a small selection of devices with LE Audio. However, more will certainly follow.

Also interesting:

In our special “Connecting several Bluetooth speakers with each other” we also present other options for connecting speakers from different manufacturers.

SkyShowtime claims to have a problem with rooted Android phones, but the reality is very different

Currently, we have a wide range of services streaming video, for all tastes and pockets. One of the last to arrive has been SkyShowtime, which, like the rest, has some little-known limits.

One of these makes all the logic in the world and refers to the incompatibility with rooted devices, that is, Android phones that are modified to obtain superuser permissions. However, seems a truth not so true because we have been able to access without any problem, and we tell you about the experience.

This is what SkyShowtime says, and this is what happens

Normally, streaming platforms and their mobile applications impose this restriction on devices that have been modified. Because? Well, for security reasons, mostly.

These services contain a multitude of copyrighted content, and therefore must avoid at all costs that users can manipulate them. Actually, it is not easy at all, since root does not give us this function, but with enough knowledge it could happen.

In addition, rooting an Android mobile does allow us to hack applications, bypass payment gateways and other malicious tasks. Hence, they all cover their backs. AND SkyShowtime was not going to be different: If we go to its help page, in the compatible devices section we will see the following message:

rooted devices

SkyShowtime is not compatible with any rooted device.

What is a rooted device? It is a device in which the operating system has been altered to remove the restrictions imposed by the manufacturer, in order to allow new higher-level features that would not otherwise be available.

The message is clear and resounding, leaving no room for doubt. However, to check we have installed the application on a rooted mobile. Through Magisk we previously obtained access, and then the surprise comes: SkyShowtime works like a charm.

Here the tests: on the left the Magisk app, on the right SkyShowtime working

What’s more, apart from being able to use it normally, The rest of the functions continue to work like any other mobile. For example, PiP mode is also operational, giving us the option to keep playback in a small window while using other apps.

The question is that what was said by SkyShowtime it is not fulfilled. As we have seen, watching a series or movie on the new platform is possible even with root. It may be that the developers of the app have not managed to implement root detection, or have put the notice on the web as a preventive method. Of course, remember that modifying your device has some risks, and it is not recommended to do so because we put our privacy at risk.

Be that as it may, they must cover their backs in the event that a user with bad ideas creates a problem for them. And so I would not leave them in a good placeneither to the platform nor to users who with good intentions want to get the most out of their devices.
