Review: Middle-earth: Shadow of War (PS4) – The Blade of Galadriel

The first story expansion for Middle-earth: Shadow of War – “The Blade of Galadriel” – cuts itself off from the microtransactions, giving away a separate plot with the new heroine. The assassin of Galadriel, however, does not quite fit into the basic assumptions of the Shadow of War.

Controversial Middle-earth: Shadow of War got a strong 9/10 from me, despite all the confusion with the endgame grind and the “real” ending hidden behind it. I’ll admit right away – no, until today I have not completed this repeated conquest and defense of fortresses. Soon after the premiere Middle-earth appeared Assassin’s Creed Origin and I preferred to platinum this beautiful adventure in Egypt than to torture myself with sieges over and over again. I got to know the plot of Talion’s adventure, I collected the collectibles, I completed the sets of items – I was full. He plans to return to these fortresses one day (preferably armed with a dozen overdue podcasts in the background), while the recently released story expansion had no problems attracting me to the console again.

Galadriel’s Blade”Depicts what happened to the elven assassin Eltariel after her final scene from the base game. Avoiding major spoilers, let me just write that the heroine must now convince the hated orcs to help her conquer fortresses … Yes, we are getting another series of sieges! But more about that soon. Before that, I must warn you that there is something much worse – the plot of this DLC. Eltariel is as sexless and boring as in the stand, and every decision she makes, however irrational it may be, always turns out to be the right one. “Why didn’t she give it to him?”, “Why did she do that?”, “What’s the point if …” – by paying minimal attention to the events of the expansion, you will quickly notice how many inaccuracies in the story are here. I’m not even talking about the events of the movies (which the expansion tries to allude to) anymore, but that doesn’t make sense even with the Shadow of War story! Well, at least the orcs are funny …

Exactly, orcs. Eltariel decided not to dominate them like Talion, but in keeping with the fact that everything works out for her and is so perfect – they join her. The main story missions are about getting the orcs to enjoy simple activities and sieges. We do not dominate the orcs, we do not influence their ranks, we do not take command – we only fight. “Galadriel’s Blade”Simply abandons the most original mechanics that made the whole game famous, the Nemesis system. Fortunately, since we have no influence on the choice of allies, it was possible to prepare more interesting personalities and what would happen to them. An orc-architect who tears down (and at the same time criticizes!) A hostile wall, brothers fixed on the point of explosions or a gallant bodyguard already have more character in their first dialogue lines than Eltariel after all the Shadow of War and his own DLC.

The plot sucks, the heroine sucks, the Nemesis system has been fired – are there any bright spots (apart from the orcs, of course)? Eltariel is played a bit differently than Talion. Her light abilities allow you to blind and damage enemies from a distance, making her a great character to control larger groups of enemies on the battlefield (so-called crowd control). With his quick fireflies, he can keep up to 5 or 6 orcs at a distance! Additionally, it can heal itself and create blinding traps, and it can kill enemies charged with light with one shot. After finding better gear than the basic one (and there are some new sets), I even felt that the game had become too easy. However, I did not have time to feel bored, because after 2-3 hours I saw the final cutscene – and this was playing without rushing and collecting new legendary items. For PLN 63 it is a LITTLE little.

Galadriel’s Blade”Wanted to introduce something fresh with Eltariel’s Light Powers, but in the end we got extremely poor DLC. There are no new locations here, the plot is boring and silly, the heroine is impossible to like, and the Nemesis system is put aside. The heroine skin for Talion is also not very tempting. This is a typical DLC without much thought for itself, released, because AAA game must have story additions to call an additional hundred (or even more!) For the season pass. I didn’t need a repeat of “The Hidden Ones“To Assassin’s Creed Origins, unfortunately I was disappointed again.

The game was reviewed on PS4 Pro

We received the code for the season pass from Warner Bros. Interactive

Shadow of the Tomb Raider: All weapons and how to get them

No, against some fears, Lara did not suddenly mutate into a female Rambo. But on the contrary, Shadow of the Tomb Raider places much more value on silent operation than its two predecessors. However, if you do get caught sneaking (and that can hardly be avoided), you can seldom avoid your opponents with one of the many weapons edit in game.

The selection is comparatively conservative, but therefore no less effective. You can choose from four weapon categories, each with several different lead syringes. Their differences are more of a marginal nature; As a rule, there is no ratchet that is fundamentally “the best” of its type.

You can access the following types of weapons:

  • Sheets
  • Handguns
  • Rifles
  • Shotguns

In this guide you will find a detailed overview of all weapons. You will not only learn how and where you can get them, but also which essays are available for the respective argumentation intensifiers.

All arcs in Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The standard weapon and the one that you receive at the beginning of the game. The bow can be used in many ways and is also required outside of combat – for example, if you want to stretch a rope between two pillars. You can also use burning arrows to remove inflammable barriers.

The bow is particularly recommended for silent procedures. You can turn off opponents even from a long distance and without making loud noises. However, as soon as you have to deal with several enemies at once and – even worse – they attack you directly, you are better advised to use any other weapon.

In addition, there are a few skills that greatly improve Lara’s bow handling. The skill “Lure of the Viper” (collector) lets you create decoy arrows, for example, while other skills allow you to aim at more targets at once and do other jokes.

By the way: Here you will find an overview of skills and skill points in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

arc Location image
Recurve bow Automatically during main mission “Hard Landing”
Snakewood bow Male trader in the hidden city of Paititi (approx. 4,000 gold coins)
Atlatl sheet Male trader in the hidden city of Paititi (approx. 5,500 gold coins)

You can upgrade and improve every bow. However, there are not too many attachments or other modifications that you can choose from:

  • Hunter Quiver
Medium-sized quiver with increased carrying capacity for all types of arrows. Available from male dealers in the hidden city of Paititi at a price of 2,200 gold coins.
  • Adventurer’s Quiver
Large quiver that considerably increases the carrying capacity for all types of arrows. Available from male dealers in the hidden city of Paititi at a price of 3,800 gold coins.

Pistols and small arms

The bad news in advance: Unfortunately, Lara’s iconic twin pistols have to be done without in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. In general, pistols are more likely to be neglected, as they are inferior to all other weapon categories.

Only two advantages are worth mentioning. On the one hand, you can equip most knives with silencers so that they are suitable for silent operation. If you also unlock the ability “Shimmer of the Snake” (collector), you have the option of unlocking flare ammunition with which you can blind several enemies at once. However, there are very few situations in which this makes sense.

C&T S55 Merchant in Kuwaq Yaku (4,100 pieces of gold)
J&D Model 27 Dealer in Kuwaq Yaku (4,200 pieces of gold)
River hawk When completing the side mission, bandit worries

You can buy the following gun attachments, modifications and pouches:

  • Pistol sight
Increases the zoom of your pistol. Available from dealers in Kuwaq Yaku for 1,700 gold pieces. Compatible with all pistols.
  • Gun silencer
Shots make no noise; ideally suited for silent procedures. Available from dealers in Kuwaq Yaku for 1,600 gold pieces. Compatible with the AB .45 and C&T S55.
  • Pistol ammunition pouch
Increases your carrying capacity of pistol ammunition. Available from dealers in Kuwaq Yaku for 1,600 gold pieces.

Assault rifles and submachine guns in Shadow of the Tomb Raider

The best all-round category. Rifles can convince in pretty much every area, but are the perfect choice especially for larger groups of opponents and fights at short to medium range. We therefore strongly advise you to upgrade one or more assault rifles as best as possible. Once you’ve upgraded such a gun, you don’t really need another one on your way through Lara’s adventure.

GF RAL Dealer in Kuwaq Yaku (3,200 pieces of gold)

You can buy the following rifle attachments, modifications and pouches:

  • Rifle ammunition pouch

All the shotguns and shotguns for Lara

Shotguns should of course not be missing in any game and Lara can also shoot away a few opponents with shotguns. However, you will get these melee specialists late in the game.

To be continued.

Get weapon upgrades and reinforced knives

You can access your inventory at every base camp. If you control the weapon rider there and select any weapon, you have the option to provide it with upgrades. Almost every ratchet can be improved in this way – and in some cases quite considerably. You can upgrade values such as the damage dealt, the precision or the rate of fire. However, that costs you a few materials.

By the way: In our resource guide for Shadow of the Tomb Raider you will find a detailed overview of all materials and how you can get them.

You can also reinforce your useful knife so that you can use it to cut particularly thick ropes, which in turn gives you access to previously blocked areas. Pay a visit to the female trader in the hidden city of Paititi. She’s selling you that Knife upgrade for 2,900 gold pieces.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider: All the resources and where to find the materials

As it should be for absolutely every modern open-world action adventure, comes too Shadow of the Tomb Raider not without your own Crafting system out. You can carve up a wide variety of objects: from arrows for your bow to weapon upgrades to healing medicine or new outfits for Lara. What you cannot buy in the store, you have to make yourself.

For this purpose, the developers have quite a few materials hidden in the game world. You cannot throw a stone without any resources hold true. You collect them by the wayside, find them in houses, buy supplies from dealers and have plenty of opportunities to fill your pockets with all sorts of junk anyway. You always have some resources such as hardwood in abundance, while others are much less common. But no matter where you get your materials: The number you get from a source is always prescribed. With the following skills, however, you can increase this amount and give yourself a fundamentally better chance of a high yield:

  • Viper’s Nest
You get more man-made resources (fabric, salvage, etc.) from all sources.
  • Hunger of the Hoatzin (Viewfinder)
Increased collectable natural manufacturing resources from all sources.
  • Hilt of the eagle (Viewfinder)
Increases the chance of finding rare animals.
  • Owl’s meal (Viewfinder)
You will have the opportunity to collect arrow poison and toxin from spiders and beetles.
  • Eye of the eagle (Viewfinder)
By ingesting sensory plants, you can track down prey and natural resources in the area.

By the way: In this guide you will learn everything you need to know about skills and skill points in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

You can get many resources in Shadow of the Tomb Raider in different ways. There is fat, for example, in such containers and when gutting animal carcasses.

Depending on the material, the way you find it also differs, although you can get most of the resources in different ways. For example, you can poke feathers out of bird nests, or you can get them by shooting birds. Many things like fabric, grease or black powder are simply standing around in certain containers.

Finding survival hiding spots is a great opportunity to get several different resources in one go. This is one of the numerous categories of collectibles. If you find such a buried hiding place, you not only receive experience points, but also a bunch of different materials. So it pays to find as many survival hiding spots as possible.

Buy a bag and increase your inventory

However, each resource also has its maximum load capacity. If you have reached this, Lara cannot take any more copies of the respective object, which is extremely annoying, especially with rare things. In this case you should use the materials for crafting or sell them at the dealer to make room again.

However, you can also choose a larger one bag buy with more capacity once you reach the hidden city of Paititi. Go to the trader on the market square who will sell you the larger backpack for 2,600 gold coins. A damned worthwhile deal.

By the way: switch them on “Prey of the Crow” ability (Viewfinder) free, you can also get one after the bag backpack for 3,500 thalers, which allows you to carry more ammunition and resources. You shouldn’t be stingy here either.

You can find these materials in Shadow of the Tomb Raider:

Find and hunt rare animals

There is one last, very special resource source: rare animals. These are not birds or monkeys that have run around, but mostly predators that can only be found in their traditional hunting grounds. You can find out where they are by chatting with the inhabitants of this world and going on a search for yourself. You can also unlock the “Grasp of the Eagle” skill mentioned above on this page to increase your chances of encountering rare animals. But of course a little luck is always part of it.
