PS5: Astro A50 won’t charge in sleep mode?

PlayStation 5: Astro A50 does not load

If you connect the Astro A50 to the PlayStation 5 via the base station, the headset is usually recognized immediately and is ready for use straight away. There are also no problems with charging the headset as long as the console is switched on. But if you keep putting your PS5 into sleep mode, you might ask yourself, why doesn’t the Astro Headset charge?

At first you might think that the Astro A50 on the PS5 is not charging because the USB ports are not supplied with power in sleep mode (by the way, this is also often the reason why the PS5 controller does not charge in sleep mode). If you then set the “Power supply to the USB ports” in the settings under “System” and “Energy saving” as well as “Functions available in sleep mode” and try again, then the charging problem still exists.

After some research we did figured out pretty quickly, that some owners of the PS5 and Astro A50 probably have the same problem. According to reports, the power from the USB ports in sleep mode is not enough to operate the base station and charge the headset. There is no real “solution” yet, but there is a workaround on how you can still charge the Astro A50 in sleep mode on the PS5. The workaround is to remove the base station and connect the headset directly to the console using the USB cable. If you don’t use the base station and connect the headset directly, it will also charge in sleep mode.

It will probably only be a matter of time before the charging problem with the Astro A50 on the PS5 resolves itself. According to our research, other Bluetooth or gaming headsets with a base station also have the same problem.

Using Astro A50 without a base station: Is that possible?

If you’re looking for a good wireless gaming headset for your PC or console today, you can’t avoid the Astro A50. Similar to other gaming headsets, the Astro A50 also uses a base station through which you can connect the headset to your PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The base station is not only necessary for connecting to the PC or console, but also serves as a charging station with which you can charge the battery of the wireless headset. One or two buyers of the Astro A50 may ask themselves the same question that we recently asked ourselves, and that is can you use the headset without a base station?

Connect and use Astro A50 without a base station?

The short answer is, no, at least the current generation of the Astro A50 cannot be connected without a base station. The Astro A50 currently does not have Bluetooth installed and even if you try to connect the headset to the PC or console using a USB cable or micro-USB cable, the headset is only charged and no sound is transmitted. According to our research, the micro USB port on the headset is probably intended purely for power transfer or charging the battery and not for data transfer.

If something changes on the subject in the meantime and you can connect and use the new generation of the Astro A50 without a base station, for example via Bluetooth, then we will of course add the information here. As mentioned, the current 4th generation of the Astro A50 can only be connected and used via the base station.

Reset Astro A50: Hard reset to factory settings

Reset Astro A50 to factory settings

If you want to reset the Astro A50 to the factory settings, you should first fully charge the gaming headset and/or connect it to the power supply using the micro USB cable. You can then use the headset by pressing and holding the Dolby button (between the power switch and the EQ button) and the Game button on the right outside of the earbud reset to default. You have to hold down the Dolby button and the game button for around 35 seconds and only release them again when the LED on the front lights up briefly.

Once you have reset the Astro A50, you can use it normally again and connect it to the PC or console via the base station. With a bit of luck, the problems that existed before the reset have now been resolved. If problems persist, you should check the firmware version of the headset and the base station using the Astro Command Center. If there is an update for the firmware, you should install it as soon as there are problems and bring the headset and the base station up to date. If the Astro A50 and the base station are up to date and the problems persist even after the hard reset, then you should contact customer service.

By the way, it is important that if you make changes to the presets or have created your own bass preset, you still have to “Synchronize with the device” and transfer the changes to the Astro A50. The “Synchronize” button will appear under the firmware version in the Astro Command Center.

Connecting Astro A50 to cell phone: Is that possible?

Regardless of whether you play on a PC or a console, a decent gaming headset is very important and helpful, especially for multiplayer games. A popular gaming headset is the Astro A50, which is wireless and has a long battery life, but also offers good sound. If you play games with the Astro A50 more often, sooner or later you might get the idea and want to connect the headset to your cell phone. The only question is, is this even possible and does the Astro A50 even have Bluetooth?

Connect Astro A50 to cell phone via Bluetooth?

The short answer is, no, you cannot connect the Astro A50 directly to your cell phone (incidentally, this applies to both Android smartphones and the iPhone). The reason for this is simple, because the Astro A50 does not yet have Bluetooth, at least currently (up to and including the new 4th generation). In order to use the headset, you must connect the base station or charging station to the respective device.

Connect the Astro A50 to your cell phone via a detour

The only way you can connect the current generation of the Astro A50 to your cell phone would be via Aux. For example, you can get the Mixamp from Astro and then connect the headset to Mixamp and then to your cell phone via Aux. The problem, however, is that the Mixamp has its own power supply and you can only use the Astro A50 headset with your cell phone if it is nearby.

So far there is no information as to whether the Astro A50 will have Bluetooth support in future generations. If this is the case, then you will probably be able to connect and use the headset with your cell phone like any other Bluetooth headset.   • Check the volume setting on the headset: The Astro A50 can be made quieter or louder using the volume control on the right side. Make sure the volume is set correctly here.

Astro A50 no sound on PC, PS4 or Xbox One?


Why doesn’t the sound work on the Astro A50? What can you do if you have connected the Astro A50 to your PC or console and you can’t hear any sound? This might be the question asked by one or other owner of the popular gaming headset from Astro. We have summarized a few tips and solutions in the following paragraphs as to what is usually the cause and how you can fix the “problem”.

Astro A50 no sound: what to do?

If the sound doesn’t work on the Astro A50, there could be various reasons. This starts with the wrong mode being set, the wrong audio output device being selected or the volume in the game being set incorrectly. The following things should be checked if you have sound problems with the Astro A50 on your PC, PS4 or Xbox One.

  • Check connection and volume: Is the base station of the Astro A50 connected correctly and the volume on the headset AND under Windows or on the console set correctly? Is there a separate volume setting in the game, for example for the game sound, the music in the game or similar?
  • Set the correct mode: There is a switch on the back of the base station with which you can change the mode to PC or console. Is the mode set correctly?
  • Set the audio output device correctly: You can set the audio output device and define a default device on both the PC and the console. If two audio output devices are connected, for example the TV speakers and the Astro A50, this could be the cause of the problem. For this reason, you should check whether the Astro A50 is set as the default output device (on Windows, right-click on the speaker icon in the task area, on the console in the system settings under the audio settings).
  • Try a different USB port: Is the USB port to which the base station is connected perhaps defective? As a test, you should change the USB port on the PC or console if possible.
  • Reset Astro A50 to factory settings: If you have problems with the headset, a reset to factory settings sometimes helps. In another article we have already described how to reset the Astro A50. In short: Connect the headset to the power supply and hold down the Dolby button and the game button on the right earphone for around 35 seconds.
  • Carry out a firmware update: Is the headset or base station up to date in terms of firmware? If not, then you should install the firmware updates now if the problems occur. Maybe the sound problem has already been fixed with the latest firmware version.

Depending on which headset you used before and how it was set up, it may be quite unusual if you suddenly hear your own voice through the headset’s headphones. This may be the case for some people with the Astro A50 or the A40, because the headset, or more precisely the software, has a function that allows you to play your own voice through the headphones. The function is called Sidetone and is at least currently activated by default. To change this you have to download and install the Astro Command Center. You can then reduce the effect of the sidetone or switch off the function completely in the microphone settings of the Astro A50.

  1. Download and install Astro Command Center (if you haven’t already).
  2. Start Command Center and under “Microphone” change the slider for “Sidetone” or deactivate it completely.

If you have deactivated the sidetone feature and continue to hear yourself, then there is probably feedback. On the one hand, you should check the microphone level and the set volume, and on the other hand, you should check whether the feedback may be caused by one of the participants in the conversation because, for example, they have switched on loudspeakers that are picked up by their own microphone.

Charge Astro A50 when the PC is turned off

The base station of the current generation Astro A50 is powered via the included USB cable. By the way, this applies both if you have connected the gaming headset to a PC but also to a console such as the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. As long as the PC is switched on and the headset is on the base station, the battery is charged. In most cases it looks different when the PC is switched off. In order to solve the “problem” and be able to charge the Astro A50 battery when the PC is not on, you have to make a small change in the BIOS settings. More precisely, you have to in the BIOS under the mainboard settingsthat all or only certain USB ports should also be supplied with powerwhen the PC is turned off. Almost every common motherboard has such a setting, but it is often deactivated by default.

If you have changed the setting in the BIOS and the USB ports are supplied with power even when the PC or laptop is switched off or in sleep mode, then the Astro A50 will also be charged when the PC is not switched on.

In this article we have created a short guide on what is usually the cause of the problem described above and how you can make the microphone louder.

In most cases the cause is the software, or more precisely the set microphone volume or else at the microphone level.   • Cleaning the microphone: Over time, some dust and other dirt can collect in the microphone opening. You can remove dust and other dirt from the openings using a thin object and some compressed air.
  • Install current firmware updates: If you have been using the Astro A50 for a long time and have never installed firmware updates, you should do so as soon as you have problems.
